Jordan Szwarz and rookie Chris Brown scored goals in a shootout to lift the Portland Pirates to a 2-1 win against the University of New Brunswick Thursday afternoon in a preseason scrimmage at the Portland Ice Arena.
Szwarz, in his second pro season, stuck the puck in the right side of the net to open the scoring 15 minutes into the second period. The Varsity Reds’ Cam Braes put a backhander into the same side of the goal to tie the score with 11:50 left in the game.
During the shootout, Portland goalie Mike Lee stopped four of five UNB shooters.
The UBN lineup included four former Lewiston Mainieacs — goalie Travis Fullerton, forwards Antoine Houde-Caron and Cam Critchlow and defenseman Chad Denny.
The Pirates will play the Manchester Monarchs in a preseason exhibition at 1 p.m. Sunday at PIA.
