The Portland Pirates signed veteran forward Gilbert Brule to a professional tryout contract Friday.

In another move, the NHL parent Phoenix Coyotes assigned defenseman Chris Summers to the Pirates.
Also, forward Keven Veilleux has been assigned to Gwinnett Gladiators after spending the last three weeks with the AHL team.
Brule, a veteran of 296 NHL games, spent last season with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League. In 2011, he was a key component of the Coyotes' sixth-place finish in the Pacific Division, scoring five goals and adding nine assists in 33 regular-season games and chipping in two goals and an assist in the playoffs. Brule, who also played with Edmonton and Columbus, has 43 career NHL goals.
Summers, selected by Phoenix in the first round of the 2006 NHL entry draft, scored two goals and had 10 assists in 60 games with Portland last season.
Last season, Veilleux, after playing three injury-riddled AHL seasons with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, scored nine goals and had 13 assists in 22 games with the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers.
