Boys' Roundup: Powers sharp as Cheverus takes opener

STANDISH - Mitchell Powers pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks Friday, leading Cheverus to a 3-0 victory against Bonny Eagle in an SMAA baseball opener.

The Stags took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Liam Fitzpatrick. Another run scored when Charlie Mulls put down a suicide squeeze.

CAMDEN HILLS 2, MEDOMAK VALLEY 0: Connor Graffam pitched a one-hitter as Camden Hills won an opener at Rockport.

Graffam struck out eight and walked one.

Coleman Powers scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a groundout by Joe Chamberlain.

Connor Hart drove in a second run with a single.

GORHAM 10, KENNEBUNK 1: Damon Wallace struck out six and walked none in a three-hitter as Gorham won an opener at home.

Wallace also had three hits and scored twice, and Elliot Speirs added three hits and three RBI.

LINCOLN ACADEMY 8, MORSE 6: Sawyer Pinkham had three hits and an RBI and pitched 52/3 innings for the win as the Eagles (1-1) beat the Shipbuilders (1-1) at Newcastle.

Wally Morris had two hits and two RBI, and A.J. Oliver delivered a two-run single in the fourth, when Lincoln scored four times to take an 8-3 lead.

MASSABESIC 4, DEERING 0: Brian Wardwell pitched a four-hit shutout as Massabesic won an opener at Waterboro.

Casey Nava had two hits and three RBI for the Mustangs.

WESTBROOK 11, NOBLE 0: Westbrook scored six runs in the fifth inning to win a five-inning opener at North Berwick.

Keenan Lowe gave up one hit, walked one and struck out five. He also had two RBI on two hits.

OCEANSIDE 10, MT. VIEW 2: Drew Townsend had four hits with three RBI to spark the Mariners (1-1) over the Mustangs (0-2) at Rockland.

Zac Roman drove in a pair of runs and Aaron Beal added a two-run single for Oceanside.

Freshman Nick Mazurek recorded the win, allowing two runs in the first inning, then striking out 11 and allowing only two more hits over five more innings.

Mickey Hustus had two hits with a run for Mt. View.

SACOPEE VALLEY 8, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 2: Nick York struck out eight and walked three in a three-hitter, helping the Hawks (1-1) down the Patriots (0-2) at South Hiram.

Kyle Jordan and Alex Fenderson each went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI for Sacopee.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 3, POLAND 2: Cody Loewe singled home Nick Kiesman in the 11th inning, lifting Fryeburg Academy (2-0) over the Knights (1-1) at Poland.

Billy Rascoe pitched five scoreless innings of relief for the win.

The Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the second on RBI singles by Tyler Hill and Tyler Saunders. Jake Simard's groundout scored Lukas Johnson with the tying run in the sixth.

PORTLAND 12, SANFORD 4: Nate Smart had three hits and two RBI to lead the Bulldogs in an opener at Sanford.

Smart also recorded the win, finishing with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Caleb Fraser knocked in three runs and had three hits for Portland.

Jimmy Parks and Ryan Camire had two RBI apiece for Sanford.

SOUTH PORTLAND 6, BIDDEFORD 0: Jon Vickers led off the bottom of the first with a triple, then scored on an error, and the Red Riots went on to win an opener at South Portland.

Robert Graff gave up five hits, struck out 10 and issued no walks through six innings. Adam Helmke had two doubles and scored twice.
