A pair of Maine residents excelled at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association championships in White River Junction, Vt.

Westbrook’s Keegan Goan, a junior at Elms College in Springfield, Mass., starred in the butterfly and individual medley, while St. Michael’s College senior Andrew Marshall of Kittery (St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover, N.H.) was one of the top distance swimmers at the meet.

Goan’s effort helped Elms finish sixth in the team competition. He established personal-best and school-record times in 10 of his 11 races (including heats). He finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (53.25 seconds), second in the 50 fly (23.75) and second in the 100 IM (56.26).

Goan also helped Elms set four school records in relays with four top-five finishes, placing third in the 400 and 200 medley, fourth in the 400 free and fifth in the 200 free.

Throughout the season, Goan made a habit of breaking his records. He now holds or is part of 13 school records.

Marshall set school records in three distance freestyle events, as he finished fourth in the 1,000 (10:08.30) and 1,650 (16:56.32), and fifth in the 500 (4:53.73). His 1,650 time broke a school mark by 44 seconds.

Marshall was also part of four top-10 relay teams, including the 400 and 800 free relays with sophomore Nathan Paluso of Windham. He was named the Northeast-10 Conference men’s swimmer of the week for the second time in three weeks.

For the season, Marshall was part of 15 of his team’s 37 event victories, including 13 of the team’s 33 individual wins.

At the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships, Wheaton freshman Daniel Spencer of North Yarmouth (Greely) helped set a school record in the 400 freestyle relay and was part of a season-best time in the 200 free relay that placed third.

Junior teammate Kyle Wilson swam a personal-best time to finish 16th in the 200 IM.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

St. Michael’s College freshman Catherine Tierney of Cape Elizabeth was part of a sixth-place 200 medley relay team and a seventh-place 400 free relay, and was seventh individually in the 1,650 free at the NEISDA championships.

Freshman Kelsey White of Bath (Morse) swam the fastest 200-yard butterfly of the season for Wheaton to finish 22nd at the NEWMAC championships.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Wentworth Institute of Technology junior guard Derek Mayo of Casco (Lake Region) was named a first-team all-Commonwealth Coast Conference player. Mayo has started every game in his three seasons for the Leopards. This winter he averaged 12.8 points, and team-leading totals of 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals.

On Feb. 2, he scored a career-high 25 points against Nichols.

Another Lake Region product, sophomore guard Matt Langadas of Sebago, was a 13.3 ppg scorer for Nichols College and an all-CCC honorable mention choice for the second straight season.

With back-to-back 18-point games, Bentley freshman forward Tyler McFarland of Rockport (Camden Hills) was named the Northeast-10 rookie of the week. Bentley went 1-1, with McFarland getting 10 rebounds in a four-point loss to St. Michael’s and seven rebounds in a 69-46 win against Southern New Hampshire. Bentley is 8-15.

The Falcons have been without sophomore Andrew Shaw of Saco (Thornton Academy) because of a broken collarbone.

Husson went 17-8 in the regular season and won its quarterfinal in the North Atlantic Conference tournament as the second seed thanks in part to senior Eric Modica of Kittery (Traip Academy) and junior Phil Leighton of Naples (Lake Region). Modica had 12 points, five assists and nine rebounds in the quarterfinal and was averaging 11.5 points per game. Leighton (nine points in the quarterfinal) was averaging 7.2 points.

Husson played Colby-Sawyer in the semifinals Friday night at Farmington. Colby-Sawyer is led by sophomore Zach Bean of Scarborough, who is coming off career highs in points (24) and rebounds (10) in a quarterfinal rout of Thomas.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The McConkey sisters of Fryeburg, Ariel and Maggie, formed the starting backcourt, and Danielle McCusker of South Portland is another starter who helped lead Central Maine Community College to the Yankee Small College Conference championship Monday with an 80-74 win over New Hampshire Technical Institute.

CMCC qualified for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II national tournament, earning the top seed. CMCC will open its tournament Friday in Uniontown, Pa.

Ariel McConkey is averaging six points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Maggie is also averaging six points, with 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists. McCusker averages 13.8 points and five rebounds.

Colby senior Diana Manduca of Portland (Deering) became the 16th player in school history to score 1,000 points, reaching the milestone during a loss to Southern Maine.

Colby finished the season with an 8-16 record (1-9 in NESCAC). Manduca averaged 13.9 points, and finished her career with 1,063 points, 332 assists, 321 rebounds, 151 steals and 143 3-pointers. She ranks 14th on the all-time Colby scoring list.

Junior Gabe Donahue of Cape Elizabeth joined Manduca in the starting lineup this season and contributed 3.4 points per game.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Hobart senior Nick Broadwater of Portland (Deering) continues to lead Division III goaltenders with a 1.64 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.

Hobart finished its regular season last weekend, and is 19-4-2 overall and tied with Utica for first in ECAC West at 11-3-1. Utica is No. 1 in the NCAA East Region rankings, with Hobart No. 3.

Brown University junior forward Garnet Hathaway of Kennebunkport (Phillips Andover Academy) is tied for second on the team in scoring with four goals and nine assists. Brown is 9-11-5 overall, 5-8-5 in the Ivy League. Hathaway had two goals in a recent 5-1 win against Princeton.

TRACK AND FIELD

Bates College senior captain James LePage of Cumberland (Greely) won the 800-meter run at the New England Division III championships last Saturday in Lewiston. Bates, the defending team champ, was edged by MIT.

Fellow senior captain David Hardison of South Portland finished second in the heptathlon with a team-record 4,727 points, winning the 60-meter dash and placing second in the 60 hurdles.

At the Northeast-10 championships, Bentley’s distance medley relay team that included senior Craig Robinson of Scarborough placed sixth.

Competing in the USATF New England Championships at Harvard, Wheaton freshman Amanda Peterson of Gray-New Gloucester finished 12th in the 60-yard dash, and freshman Emily Rand of Falmouth was 20th in the 400 meters.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Stonehill College had 217 athletes among its 20 athletic teams make the school’s Honor Roll for earning a GPA of 3.20 in the fall 2012 semester, among them freshman women’s soccer player Marisa Butler of Standish (Bonny Eagle), freshman tennis player Analise Kump of Falmouth, and sophomore track and field athlete Maria Curit of Biddeford.
