WHO: Red Sox (Lester 8-5) at Oakland A’s (Griffin 7-6)

WHEN: 10:05 p.m.

The Red Sox gave up Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Brandon Jacobs in exchange for the 36-year-old Thornton. Thornton has a 3.86 ERA in 40 games this season, but left-handed hitters are batting just .173 against him.

Thornton fills a hole left by the season-ending injury to Andrew Miller.

Jacobs, 22, was promoted to the Sea Dogs on Thursday after hitting .244 with 11 homers and 44 RBI for Class A Salem.

BRANDON WORKMAN will make his first major league start Sunday against Oakland in the final game before the All-Star break.

Workman, a right-hander who began this season with the Sea Dogs, allowed three runs in two innings of relief Wednesday against Seattle after being called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. He was 8-2 with a 3.21 ERA in the minors, including 11 games with Portland.

CLAY BUCHHOLZ will not make a rehab start Sunday but instead will throw another bullpen session.

Buchholz threw 35 pitches Friday, and the Red Sox plan to have him throw at least two more bullpen sessions before deciding about a rehab assignment.
