TORONTO — Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz said Wednesday his latest bullpen session was “probably the best day so far” in his recovery from neck and shoulder ailments.

Buchholz has been sidelined since June 9. He threw nearly 50 pitches.

He got up and down three times to simulate inning breaks, and said his final 10 to 15 pitches were thrown at approximately 85 percent effort.

Buchholz will throw a similar session Saturday, then pitch with batters standing in the box in his following stint.

“I’d rather have some guys stand in,” he said. “You know, it’s been a while. Instead of just going out and throwing in a minor league game, it would be better for me to just see the hitter.”

JOE TORRE, the executive vice president for major league baseball, gave his instant replay proposal to the executive committee to consider as baseball’s brass huddled for two days of meetings.

Commissioner Bud Selig said “it was very thoughtful and well-done.” The commissioner will discuss it in more detail Thursday.

ROYALS-BLUE JAYS: Kansas City acquired Emilio Bonifacio from Toronto for cash or a player to be named, giving it a versatile player capable of providing depth in a banged-up infield.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas remained out of the lineup with a strained left calf. Fellow infielder Miguel Tejada, who had been playing second and third regularly, went on the disabled list Sunday with a strained right calf.

CARDINALS: Catcher Yadier Molina expects to be in the lineup Thursday, the first day he’s eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list from a right knee strain. He wants to play every day again, too.

Molina worked out on the field for the third straight day and said everything felt good. He said now is no time to rest.

ANGELS: The team recalled infielder Andrew Romine from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill in for ailing shortstop Erick Aybar.

Romine was in the starting lineup, batting eighth against the New York Yankees. Aybar, a Gold Glove winner in 2011, left Tuesday night’s loss with cramping in his left calf. He had started 80 straight games at shortstop.

CUBS: Jake Arrieta is coming up to join Chicago’s rotation Friday, giving the team a chance to take a long look at him over the final part of the season.

Arrieta, 27, was acquired in a July 2 trade with Baltimore. He’s made one start with Chicago, pitching six effective innings July 30 in a 3-2 loss to Milwaukee. He’s 2-2 with a 3.56 ERA in seven starts with Triple-A Iowa.

BLUE JAYS: Toronto put outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left abdominal muscle.

The Blue Jays recalled infielder Munenori Kawasaki from Triple-A Buffalo.

RANGERS: Pitcher Matt Harrison said he’s more frustrated than anything that he won’t pitch again this season.

While summing up 2013 as “forgettable,” Harrison said he’s not angry. He said he did everything possible to get back after two operations on a herniated disk in his lower back.

ASTROS-RANGERS: Houston traded minor league left-hander pitcher Travis Blackley to Texas for cash and a player to be named.

Blackley, 30, went 1-1 with a 4.89 ERA in 42 relief appearances for Houston this season before being designated for assignment Aug. 8.

RAYS: The team isn’t sure when injured left-hander Matt Moore will rejoin the rotation.
