NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Daniel Ortiz lined a single to left field that scored Curt Smith with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday to lift the New Britain Rock Cats to a 6-5 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs at New Britain Stadium.

Smith hit a one-out single off Portland reliever Will Latimer, who entered at the start of the inning, and moved to third on a two-out double by James Beresford.

Marty Popham earned the win with two scoreless innings for the Rock Cats (5-5).

It was the second straight extra-inning game for the clubs, after Portland’s 6-5 win Saturday in 10 innings.

The Sea Dogs (4-5) rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the top of the fifth inning, getting two-run doubles from Travis Shaw and Tony Thomas.

Shannon Wilkerson led off the game for Portland with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Heiker Meneses and scored on Travis Shaw’s groundout to third base.

Portland starter Matt Barnes threw two scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the third, allowing four runs before leaving with the bases loaded.

It was the first start as a professional in Connecticut for Barnes, a native of Bethel, Conn., who played at the University of Connecticut.

Reliever Keith Couch allowed a sacrifice fly to former Sea Dog Reynaldo Rodriguez, then gave up just one hit while striking out three and walking two in 42/3 scoreless innings.

Miguel Celestino followed with two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.
