Marc Sawyer has returned to his alma mater, Westbrook High School, after teaching health and physical education and serving as varsity baseball coach at Bonny Eagle High School.

Sawyer's back at Westbrook

WESTBROOK — Marc Sawyer, a Westbrook native, said he always thought about returning to his alma mater as Westbrook High's athletic and activities director.

The opportunity arose when Todd Sampson left to become the athletic director at Mt. Ararat High in Topsham. Sawyer, 39, was hired July 12 and began work the next day.

"When I heard Todd was moving on. I got pretty excited," said Sawyer, who graduated from Westbrook High in 1991 where he was a three-sport athlete -- soccer, basketball and baseball.

"It's a wonderful opportunity. People here remember me as a student-athlete. The reception has been strickly positive. I'm real happy Superintendent Marc Gousse and the committee found me to be qualified. I'm happy to be coming home," he said.

For the last seven seasons, Sawyer taught health and physical education at Bonny Eagle High. He has been the Scots' varsity baseball coach the last five years.

In his week and a half at Westbrook, Sawyer has been meeting coaches. He has also been working on securing game officials and buses for the fall season.

"I've also been doing a lot of listening to the coaches and getting up to speed on the wants and needs of each program. I want to know how I can help," he said.

Sawyer said Sampson helped with the transition.

"Todd finished all the scheduling for the fall season; it's made my start a lot smoother," he said.

Sawyer graduated from UMaine with a health and physical education degree. He has a master's in health education and a certificate of advanced graduate study from the University of New England.

Sawyer lives in Scarborough with his wife, Kate, and their two children, Alana and Andrew.
