"Our mother doesn't play," said Van the elder. "When we call home we talk to our father about golf. He doesn't want to hear the scores. He wants to know if we had fun."
Three Fryeburg female golfers qualifed for Saturday's state tournament. Liz Dyer, a junior who was ill Tuesday and didn't practice, is the third. Dutton is hopeful for all three.
For Van the elder, the victory already has been won. She also played competitive golf for only two years. Her medal for sixth place last year was a surprise and a treasure. She hopes to stay in New England next year and enter a nursing program. Van the younger already is thinking about law. Both will continue to play golf. They will improve.
Their English-language skills are very good. They return to Vietnam once each year after final exams. I got the impression they will go home to their country when their education finally is finished.
"You will contact me if you visit Vietnam?" asked Van the elder before she walked to the first tee. "We do see more Americans."
The world is that much smaller.
