Major League Notebook: Sox place Ortiz on disabled list; Furbush on DL

The Associated Press

BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox placed designated hitter David Ortiz on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right Achilles tendon before Wednesday night's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Manager Bobby Valentine said a second opinion concurred with the team's original report. Ortiz was injured rounding second base in Monday night's victory against Chicago.

Valentine said it would be a week to 10 days before Ortiz resumes playing, so the team elected to put him on the DL.

Ortiz has 23 homers and 58 RBI, and is on an 11-game hitting streak.

He also has at least a hit and a walk in 10 straight games, breaking Ted Williams' club record set in 1950.

To fill his spot on the roster, Boston recalled Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

MARINERS: Seattle placed left-handed reliever Charlie Furbush, a South Portland native, on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left triceps.

Furbush left Tuesday night's game in the seventh inning after retiring the only Kansas City batter he faced.

Furbush is 4-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 34 relief appearances this season, with 47 strikeouts in 371/3 innings.

The Mariners recalled right-handed reliever Steve Delabar from Triple-A Tacoma, one day after he was optioned to the Pacific Coast League affiliate. This is Delabar's fourth stint this season with Seattle. He is 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA in 30 relief appearances.
