Second round of private talks on NHL lockout

NHL Players' Association head Donald Fehr and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman held a second round of private talks Saturday in New York, in an effort to move closer to an agreement that would end the ongoing lockout.

While negotiating teams from the union and the league discussed definitions of what makes up hockey-related revenue -- the pool of money the sides are trying to figure out how to split up -- Fehr and Bettman talked about the differences that are keeping the sides apart.

They talked for a second straight day on matters separate from the core economic issues that ultimately will have to be hammered out. In the recently expired collective bargaining agreement between the league and the union, the players got a 57 percent share of hockey-related revenue.

The NHL wants to cut the number down to under 50 percent.

TENNIS

PAN PACIFIC OPEN: Russia's Nadia Petrova beat defending champion Agnieska Radwanska 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 to win the final in Tokyo.

Petrova won her 12th career title and for the first time in her career beat three top-10 players in the same week: No. 7 Sara Errani, No. 9 Samantha Stosur and No. 3 Radwanska.

THAILAND OPEN: Gilles Simon upset top-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-4 to set up an all-French final against Richard Gasquet at Bangkok.

Gasquet rallied from a set and two breaks down to beat Jarkko Nieminen 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 after the Finn failed to serve out the match leading 5-4 in the second set.

The fourth-seeded Simon won the title in 2009 and improved his head-to-head record against Tipsarevic to 5-1. He broke the Serb in his first service game and then saved a break point in the 10th game before clinching the set when Tipsarevic netted a forehand.

MALAYSIAN OPEN: Second-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina outlasted Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) to reach the final in Kuala Lumpur.

Monaco is looking for his fourth title of the year, while Nishikori has yet to reach a final in 2012.

The 11th-ranked Monaco will face either top-seeded David Ferrer of Spain or France's Julien Benneteau in Sunday's final.

PREP SCHOOLS

BOYS' SOCCER: Ethan Morrow scored four goals and Jamal Frazer Borden scored twice to lead Hyde to a 6-0 win over Gould Academy at Bath.

GIRLS' SOCCER: Kara Fischer scored a pair of goals for Hyde and Katie Comeux made several key saves in net as the Phoenix held on for a 2-1 victory over Gould Academy at Bethel.

BOXING

WBA: Undefeated Alexander Povetkin of Russia retained his WBA heavyweight title, stopping American challenger Hasim Rahman in the second round at Hamburg, Germany.

Referee Gustavo Padilla stopped it 1:36 into the round, with Povetkin able to pick his shots at will against the 39-year-old former WBC, IBF and IBO champion.

The 33-year-old Povetkin improved to 25-0 with his 17th knockout. Rahman dropped to 50-8-2 after his first bout since June 2011.

CYCLING

QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT: Joaquin Rodriguez won the Giro di Lombardia with a late solo breakaway in the rain at Lecco, Italy, to end the season at the top of the UCI rankings.

It marked the 10th win of the season for Rodriguez, who finished second in the Giro d'Italia and third in the Spanish Vuelta this year.
