Vonn finishes another 3-for-3 weekend at Lake Louise with a super-G victory

Lindsey Vonn is in a class by herself when it comes to women’s World Cup skiing at Lake Louise, Alberta.

After winning downhill races Friday and Saturday, Vonn capped a weekend sweep with a victory in Sunday’s super-G. The American star recorded a hat trick at Lake Louise for the second straight year.

Vonn now has 14 career wins at Lake Louise, and she hopes that’s enough to prompt skiing’s world governing body to reconsider her request to compete in the men’s World Cup downhill at the site.

“It’s not like I’m getting 20th every day and saying I want to race the men,” Vonn said. “I try to let my skiing speak for itself.

“I think this weekend was the next step for me and a testament to why I want to race with the men.”

The U.S. women’s team had a banner weekend in the season-opening speed events. Julia Mancuso was second in super-G after Stacey Cook was runner-up to Vonn in both downhills.

MEN’S WORLD CUP: Ted Ligety of the United States easily captured his second straight giant slalom race with a flawless and fast final run at Beaver Creek, Colo.

Ligety finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 25.59 seconds, holding off top rival Marcel Hirscher of Austria by 1.76 seconds. Davide Simoncelli of Italy was third.

HIGH SCHOOLS

FIELD HOCKEY: Messalonskee’s Kristy Bernatchez, who scored a state-record 45 goals this season, was named the winner of the Miss Maine Field Hockey award.

Bernatchez was chosen from a group of finalists that included Sarah Finnemore of Skowhegan, Elise Tilton of John Bapst and Julia Ward of Belfast. She finished her high school career with 70 goals and 31 assists.

GOLF

WORLD CHALLENGE: Graeme McDowell closed with a 4-under 68 at Thousand Oaks, Calif., and won his first title in two years.

Keegan Bradley finished three shots back after a 69. Tiger Woods, the tournament host and defending champion, didn’t make birdie until the 13th hole and closed with a 71 to tie for fourth.

NEDBANK CHALLENGE: Martin Kaymer of Germany shot a 3-under 69 to earn his first title of 2012, holding on for a two-shot victory in rainy conditions at Sun City, South Africa.

Kaymer finished at 8-under 280, two strokes ahead of Charl Schwartzel (69) of South Africa. Bill Haas of the United States was third after a 71.

SOCCER

FA CUP: Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal will play on the road against Premier League opponents in the third round.

Sunday’s draw paired United, the Premier League leader, with West Ham. Chelsea, the defending FA Cup champion, will face Southampton, and

Arsenal must travel to Swansea, which beat the Gunners 2-0 in a league match on Saturday.

The matches will be played the first weekend of January.
