Mediators again assisting in attempt to end lockout

NHL labor negotiations will resume Wednesday, with mediators rejoining the talks at an undisclosed location in an effort to save the hockey season.

U.S. federal mediators Scot Beckenbaugh and John Sweeney are to return to the process. They took part in sessions Nov. 27 and 28 before deciding they couldn't help. Tuesday marked the 87th day of the lockout.


MLS: Sporting Kansas City acquired midfielder Benny Feilhaber from the New England Revolution for money and draft picks.

SUPER Y: Alexandra Ford's two goals led the Atlanta Fire to a 4-1 victory over the Seacoast United Mariners, of southern Maine, in the U15 girls' championship match of the Super Y League national tournament in Bradenton, Fla.

Atlanta took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Seacoast United failed to clear the ball. Atlanta added another goal late in the half, and increased the lead to to 3-0 before Liz Lane scored for the Mariners.

Seacoast United finished the tournament at 4-1-1, with both the loss and tie coming against Atlanta. The Fire finished at 5-0-1.


RYDER CUP: The PGA of America is introducing its next Ryder Cup captain during a segment of the "Today" show on Thursday. NBC is the longtime broadcast partner of the Ryder Cup.


ITF: Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were honored as the International Tennis Federation's world champions for 2012. Djokovic won the men's award for the second straight year, while Williams took the honor for the third time in her career.


WORLD CUP: A women's downhill has been scheduled at Val d'Isere on Friday instead of Saturday to take advantage of a better forecast.


ARMSTRONG UPDATE: Lance Armstrong resisted turning over records sought by U.S Postal Service investigators, then tried to keep the inquiry under seal, according to recently released documents.

The Postal Service was Armstrong's main sponsor when he won the Tour de France from 1999-2004.


EASTERN LEAGUE: Oakland Athletics outfielder and former Portland Sea Dog Josh Reddick will attend the Sea Dogs Hot Stove Dinner and Silent Auction on Jan. 11 at the Sable Oaks Marriott in South Portland.

Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon will also be at the event, which benefits the Maine Children's Cancer Program.
