Stoudemire may return for game vs. Red Claws

Amare Stoudemire of the New York Knicks, who hasn’t played this season following left knee surgery, was assigned Tuesday night to the Erie BayHawks of the NBA D-League.

The BayHawks will be in Portland on Saturday night to play the Maine Red Claws at the Expo.

Reports out of Erie and New York suggested Stoudemire may just practice with the team before returning to the Knicks. No plans were announced either way.

SKIING

Complete rest is planned for Vonn during break

Lindsey Vonn doesn't plan to do any serious training on skis during her midseason break from the World Cup.

Rainer Salzgeber, racing director of Vonn's equipment supplier Head, said Tuesday that the four-time overall winner hasn't asked for her ski technician, Heinz Haemmerle, to follow her to the United States.

"No, she won't ski. She said she needs to rest and get her fitness, and I think also her mind," Salzgeber said. "She wants to do some dry-land training and that's it."

Marcel Hirscher of Austria, the defending World Cup overall champion, was fastest in both runs , winning a night slalom at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. Hirscher moved past an American rival, Ted Ligety, into second place in the overall standings. Ligety, who has dominated in giant slalom this season, finished ninth.

SOCCER

ONYEWU SCORES: United States defender Oguchi Onyewu scored three minutes into injury time to secure Malaga a 1-1 draw at third-division Eibar in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 match in Spain.

Onyewu jumped above two Eibar players to head a last-gasp free kick over Eibar goalkeeper Jon Altamira, who had unwisely rushed off this line.

MLS: Major League Soccer's season will open March 2 with six games on its earliest start date, and New England will be the final team to open at home when it meets Dallas on March 23.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Mike Thibault, a two-time WNBA coach of the year, was named the head coach and general manager of the Washington Mystics.

The Mystics went a combined 11-55 the past two seasons, and parted ways with coach and GM Trudi Lacey in September.

TRACK

SUSPENSIONS: Two female athletes whose doping cases emerged at the London Olympics were suspended by their national federations.

Ghfran Almouhamad, a Syrian 400-meter hurdler, was banned for six months through Feb. 9. A Turkish long jumper, Karin Mey Melis, was banned for two years until Aug. 7, 2014.

GOLF

WORLD HALL OF FAME: Colin Montgomerie and Ken Schofield, head of the European Tour for nearly 30 years, were announced as the latest inductees. They fill out the 2013 class that includes Willie Park Jr., Fred Couples and Ken Venturi.

Montgomerie won the European Tour money list a record eight times. He received 51 percent of the vote on the international ballot. That makes two inductees in this class -- Couples was the other -- who got in through a special provision. If no one gets the minimum 65 percent, the player with the most votes gets elected as long as it's more than 50 percent.

HARNESS RACING

TOP HORSE: Chapter Seven was voted Trotter of the Year after eight victories in 10 starts.
