Melo’s fine play earns him promotion to the Celtics
The Boston Celtics recalled Fab Melo from the Maine Red Claws.
Melo, a 7-foot center, has averaged 10.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.83 blocks in 12 games for the Red Claws, who lead the D-League’s East Division.
Melo recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 14 blocks against Erie on Dec. 22, then scored 32 points with nine rebounds and nine blocks against Idaho on Dec. 26.
BASEBALL
NECBL: Teams from South Kingstown, R.I., Plymouth, Mass., and Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will join the New England Collegiate Baseball League when the league begins its 20th season this June.
The trio will be known as the Ocean State Waves, Plymouth Pilgrims and Saratoga Brigade.
The league will also realign its 13 teams in two divisions.
Maine’s representative, the Sanford Mainers, will be positioned in the seven-team Eastern Division with Laconia, Ocean State, New Bedford, Newport, Mystic and Plymouth, while the Western Division will be comprised of Vermont, Keene, Saratoga Springs, North Adams, Holyoke and Danbury.
HOCKEY
JUNIOR PLAYOFFS: John Gaudreau had a hat trick and the United States beat the Czech Republic 7-0 to reach the semifinals of the world junior hockey championships in Ufa, Russia.
The Americans will play Canada on Thursday. Defending champion Sweden will face Russia in the other semifinal.
TENNIS
QATAR OPEN: Nikolay Davydenko and Gael Monfils reached the quarterfinals with respective victories over fourth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 6-3, and third-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Top-seeded David Ferrer beat Germany qualifier Tobias Kamke, 6-3, 6-2. Second-seeded Richard Gasquet rallied past 55th-ranked Grega Zemlja of Slovenia 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6.
CHENNAI OPEN: Second-seeded Janko Tipsarevic beat French player Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the India tournament to set up a quarterfinal match with Go Soeda of Japan.
HOPMAN CUP: Bernard Tomic upset top-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, but Australia lost to Serbia 2-1 at the Perth tournament.
BOWLING
PBA: Tennis legend Billie Jean King is the celebrity owner of the New York City WTT KingPins in the Professional Bowlers Association.
