Strahan among 15 finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Single-season sacks leader Michael Strahan and two players who tried to block him are among 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Strahan, who had 221/2 sacks in 2001 and 1411/2 for his 15-year career with the New York Giants, is joined by offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden of the Ravens and guard/tackle Larry Allen of the Cowboys and 49ers.

The fourth first-year eligible player to make the cut is defensive tackle Warren Sapp of the Buccaneers and Raiders.

The other finalists are running back Jerome Bettis; receivers Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Andre Reed; LB-DEs Charles Haley and Kevin Greene; guard Will Shields; defensive back Aeneas Williams; Coach Bill Parcells; and former owners Edward DeBartolo Jr. of the 49ers and the late Art Modell of the Browns and Ravens.

• Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has a sprained foot but is probable and expected to play Sunday against Atlanta.

• The Dallas Cowboys hired former Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin as the replacement for Rob Ryan.

• Chiefs Coach Andy Reid announced that former Eagles assistant Doug Pederson will be his offensive coordinator and longtime Jets assistant Bob Sutton will be the defensive coordinator.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Maddie Duchene had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Torie St. Pierre scored 11 points to help Berwick Academy (8-2) earn a 41-37 win over Lexington Christian Academy (6-2) at South Berwick.

BASEBALL

MAJOR LEAGUES: Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton vetoed a trade to the Seattle Mariners, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Upton’s contract gives him the power to turn down a trade to a short list of cities, including Seattle. FoxSports.com reported that the Mariners offered to trade relievers Charlie Furbush of South Portland and Stephen Pryor, infield prospect Nick Franklin, and one of its three pitching prospects — James Paxton, Danny Hultzen or Taijuan Walker.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Dale Earnhardt Jr. started a 12-car accident at Daytona that essentially shut down a three-day test session designed to hone NASCAR’s redesigned cars.

Stock-car racing’s most popular driver was trying to bump draft with Marcos Ambrose on the back straightaway when he lifted Ambrose and turned him into the wall. Ambrose’s Ford bounced back across the track and triggered a pileup that collected a host of others.

Two of Earnhardt’s Hendrick Motorsports teammates, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne, also were involved. So were defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, new teammate Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray, Martin Truex Jr., Aric Almirola and Regan Smith.

There were no injuries, but the wreck caused several teams to leave Daytona.

GOLF

PGA: Russell Henley putted for birdie on every hole on his way to a second straight round of a 7-under 63, giving him a two-shot lead over fellow rookie Scott Langley and Scott Piercy in the Sony Open at Honolulu.

He was at 14-under 126, breaking the 36-hole tournament scoring record by two shots.

Dustin Johnson, coming off a four-shot win last week in the Tournament of Champions, withdrew after nine holes because of the flu.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Louis Oosthuizen made a long birdie putt on his final hole to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Volvo Championships in Durban, South Africa.

Oosthuizen had an 8-under 64 for a 12-under 132 total, one shot ahead of Scotland’s Scott Jamieson (64) and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (68).

HOCKEY

NHL: Forward Jochen Hecht is returning to play for Buffalo, agreeing to a one-year contract.

• Scott Niedermayer, the former Anaheim Ducks captain and four-time Stanley Cup champion defenseman, will be an assistant coach, the Ducks announced.
