Exodus of Seminole assistants continues with offensive coordinator’s move to Miami

Florida State offensive coordinator James Coley is leaving his alma mater for the same job at archrival University of Miami.

The 39-year-old Coley is the sixth Seminole assistant leaving Jimbo Fisher’s staff since the end of the season along with the school’s football publicist.

Defensive coordinator Mark Stoops left to become coach at Kentucky and took D.J. Eliot with him. Running backs coach Eddie Gran went to Cincinnati as offensive coordinator, linebackers coach Greg Hudson left to become defensive coordinator at Purdue and quarterbacks coach Dameyune Craig returned to Auburn in a similar role.

The Miami-based lawyer at the center of the latest developments in Miami’s NCAA investigation came out firing a day after her involvement came into question.

Maria Elena Perez, who represents former Hurricane booster Nevin Shapiro, said she’s the NCAA’s “patsy,” as the governing body launches an internal probe into its Miami investigation. A day earlier, the NCAA president, Mark Emmert, said there were major issues with their investigation into Miami recruiting and compliance based on actions taken by a member of its enforcement staff and Shapiro’s lawyer.

The NCAA hired outside counsel to, in part, look into how testimony was obtained during Shapiro’s bankruptcy depositions.

Perez, a Miami law school grad, said she did not work in collusion with NCAA investigators. She did say the NCAA paid her a small amount of money for her services, but did not consider herself a member of its legal team.
