Flacco seems certain to make at least $14M with contract negotiations set to begin

Quarterback Joe Flacco’s agent and the Baltimore Ravens plan to meet this weekend in their first attempt to reach a new contract for the Super Bowl MVP.

Flacco played out his rookie contract last season, earning fewer than $7 million. Even if the Ravens franchise him, he would at least double that salary for next season.

The going rate for a nonexclusive franchise quarterback is $14.6 million for one season. Other teams could make an offer to Flacco under that tag, with the Ravens having the right to match it, or let him go and receive two first-round draft picks in return.

The Chiefs released wide receiver Steve Breaston and tight end Kevin Boss as part of their roster overhaul under new coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey.

The Saints cut veteran tight end David Thomas and third-year cornerback Johnny Patrick.

The Jets released veteran linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace and three other players, clearing about $31 million in salary cap space.
