Cheverus names Bill Bodwell as school’s coach for boys’ varsity lacrosse

Cheverus High School named Bill Bodwell as its boys’ varsity lacrosse coach for this season. Bodwell comes to Cheverus from Lewiston, where he coached from 2010 to 2012. While at Lewiston, Bodwell was named KVAC Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011, and also guided the Blue Devils to the Eastern Class A championship in 2011.

Bodwell has also served as coach for the Brunswick girls’ hockey team since 2008.

He is a member of the state House of Representatives, representing Brunswick, Lisbon and Durham.

HOCKEY

AHL: The Phoenix Coyotes recalled defenseman Chris Summers from the Portland Pirates.

Summers, who was selected by Phoenix in the first round of the 2006 NHL draft, has played five games for the Coyotes this season. In 28 career NHL games, he has three assists.

• The league suspended Portland rookie left wing Darian Dziurzynski for one game because of his actions following a 4-3 overtime loss to the Wilkes-Barre Penguins last Saturday night.

After that game, Dziurzynski, who will miss Wednesday night’s game against the Adirondack Phantoms, received a two-minute minor for roughing, a five-minute major for fighting and a 10-game misconduct for fighting other than during a period.

DOGSLED RACING

IDITAROD: Mitch Sevey, the 2004 champion, is leading the race but Aliy Zirkle, who finished second last year, is close behind as the race leaders prepare for a 77-mile sprint to the finish line in Nome.

Seavey pulled into the checkpoint at White Mountain at 5:11 a.m. Tuesday, just 13 minutes ahead of Zirkle.

FREESTYLE: Seven weeks after a tragedy on the snowmobile course marred the Winter X Games, ESPN decided to scrap the best trick competition, saying it was a move the network had been considering before Caleb Moore’s death in Aspen, Colo.

Moore, a 25-year-old from Krum, Texas, died from injuries he sustained when his 450-pound sled rolled over him after a back flip gone wrong during a freestyle competition event.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Lionel Messi started the comeback with two first-half goals and Barcelona, playing at home, overwhelmed AC Milan 4-0 to reach its sixth straight quarterfinal.

Messi passed Ruud van Nistelrooy (56) on the Champions League scoring list and trails only Raul Gonzalez (71).

TENNIS

BNP Paribas open: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga edged Mardy Fish 7-6 (4), 7-6 (0) in the third round at Indian Wells, Calif.

Tsonga has beaten Fish all four times they have played. He will next play 17th-seeded Milos Raonic, who outlasted Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
