Alex Morgan's two goals lead U.S. women past Germany for their ninth Algarve Cup
The United States won the prestigious Algarve Cup for the ninth time, beating Germany 2-0 in Wednesday's final at Faro, Portugal.
Alex Morgan scored both goals in the first half as the American women won their first significant tournament under new coach Tom Sermanni.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Malaga became the third Spanish team to reach this year's quarterfinals by beating undermanned Porto 2-0 in Malaga, Spain, while Bayern Munich barely staved off an improbable comeback, eliminating Arsenal from the Champions League despite a 2-0 loss at home.
The defeat by the Gunners left England without a team in the quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years.
TENNIS
BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Maria Kirilenko outlasted No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in searing heat to reach the semifinals for the first time in Indian Wells, Calif.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: Fog canceled World Cup racing in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, giving the injured Lindsey Vonn a record sixth straight downhill title without having to show up on the mountain. The title comes five weeks after a crash and season-ending knee injury for the American.
"Omg I won the World Cup Downhill title!!!!! 6 in a row with a bum knee!" Vonn wrote on her Facebook page. She finished one point ahead of overall champ Tina Maze of Slovenia.
• The men's final downhill also was canceled, giving Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal his first title in the discipline.
BASKETBALL
WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES: Oklahoma's Sherri Coale was chosen to coach the U.S. team at the Women's World University Games this summer in Russia. Her assistants will be Marist's Brian Giorgis and Penn State's Coquese Washington.
The 16-team competition takes place July 8-15 in Kazan, Russia.
DOGSLED RACING
IDITAROD: Mitch Seavey, a 53-year-old former champion, became the oldest winner of Alaska's grueling test of endurance, as he and his 10 dogs crossed the Nome finish line to cheering crowds at 10:39 p.m. Alaska time Tuesday.
His race time in the 1,000-mile race was nine days, 7 hours and 39 minutes.
HIGH SCHOOLS
HOCKEY: The East-West Class A and Class B senior all-star games will held Saturday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.
The Class B game, which will feature players from six schools in the West region and from 10 schools in the East Region, will start at 3:30 p.m.
The Class A game, which will feature players from nine schools from the West region and from 11 schools in the East Region, will start at 6 p.m.
