Nadal comes back to beat del Potro, win BNP Paribas
Rafael Nadal rallied from a set and 1-3 down in the second to beat Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the BNP Paribas Open final at Indian Wells, Calif., on Sunday, giving the Spaniard his third title in four tournaments since returning from a seven-month injury layoff.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: Felix Neureuther of Germany edged overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher to win the men’s season-ending slalom race at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
Ted Ligety of the United States placed third overall with a career-best 1,022 points.
• Tina Maze rebounded from her women’s World Cup slalom title defeat to American Mikaela Shiffrin by ending her historic season with a giant slalom victory.
• American Sarah Hendrickson won the season’s last women’s ski jumping World Cup meet at Oslo, Norway.
BOXING
PORTLAND BOXING CLUB: Russell Lamour, a middleweight, won his third straight bout since turning pro with a unanimous decision over Eddie Caminero of Lawrence, Mass., at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.
GOLF
LPGA: Stacy Lewis won the Founders Cup to jump to No. 1 in the world, taking advantage of Ai Miyazato’s collapse on the 16th hole at Phoenix.
Lewis won for the seventh time in her LPGA Tour career to end Yani Tseng’s 109-week run at No. 1.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Thomas Aiken of South Africa led from start to finish on the final day to win the Avantha Masters by three shots in Greater Noida, India.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: David Frost won the Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach, Calif., shooting a final-round 65 to defeat Fred Couples by five strokes and tie the tournament record of 19-under 194 set by Jay Haas in 2007.
MOTOR SPORTS
NO SMOKING: The New Hampshire Motor Speedway has banned smoking in the grandstand seating areas.
The Loudon, N.H., racetrack said there will be designated smoking areas throughout the concourse level, and that smoking will still be allowed in parking lots, campgrounds and in souvenir, display and hospitality areas.
The new policy drew strong comments on both sides on the track’s Facebook page.
FORMULA ONE: Kimi Raikkonen won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne, pulling off a two-stop strategy while his six nearest rivals all needed three.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Former Oakland Raiders tight end Brandon Myers signed with the New York Giants as a free agent. The team did not disclose details.
HORSE RACING
WORLD RECORD: Bright Thought, a 4-year-old, set a world record of 2 minutes, 22.72 seconds for a 11/2-mile turf race at Santa Anita, in Arcadia, Calif. — bettering the old mark of 2:22.80, set by Hawkster on Oct. 14, 1989.
