HIGH SCHOOLS

Greely forward Ted Hart receives award as the top Western Class B hockey player

Ted Hart, a junior forward from Greely High, received the Evans Spear Memorial Award as the Western Class B boys' hockey player of the year.

Hart, who led the Rangers to their second consecutive state championship, also was named the top forward in the region.

Kyle Megathlin, also of Greely, was named the region's defenseman of the year, and Kyle Kramlich of Greely and Red DeSmith of Yarmouth shared goaltender of the year.

Karl Enroth of Camden Hills was named Western Class B coach of the year.

BASKETBALL

D-LEAGUE: The Maine Red Claws acquired center Will Foster to replace center Garrett Stutz, who was added to the inactive list due to illness.

Foster, who was a teammate of a current Red Claw player, Micah Downs, at Gonzaga, was waived March 5 by the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Foster averaged 3.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 15.8 minutes in 30 games with the Skyforce.

SPEED SKATING

PRESIDENT NAMED: Mike Plant, the Atlanta Braves' vice president, was appointed president of the U.S. Speed Skating board with the Winter Olympics less than a year away. Plant is a former speed skater and member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team.

SOCCER

INFLUENCE SOUGHT: Jeffrey Webb, the president of CONCACAF, which includes the United States, will ask his FIFA executive committee colleagues this week to increase his region's share of influence on the panel, where it has only three of the 25 seats.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Michael Owen, a former England striker who plays for Stoke, said he will retire from soccer at the end of the Premier League season.

WATER POLO

COACH REMAINS: Coach Adam Krikorian of the U.S. gold medal-winning women's water polo team signed a four-year commitment to lead the team through the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

TENNIS

SONY OPEN: Flavia Pennetta of Italy won her first-round match 6-4, 6-1 against Johanna Larsson of Sweden at Key Biscayne, Fla.
