University of Southern Maine beats Bowdoin 7-2 in matchup at Brunswick

Nick Grady went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs to help the University of Southern Maine down Bowdoin 7-2 in a baseball game at Brunswick on Wednesday.

Grady hit a two-run double in the first inning for the Huskies, now 11-3, while Bowdoin falls to 9-9 on the year.

SOFTBALL: UNE split with Eastern Nazarene as Abby Lambert pitched a three-hitter and hit a go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning as the Nor’easters (9-7, 3-3 Commonwealth Coast) rallied for a 2-1 victory in the second game at Quincy, Mass.

Eastern Nazarene won the opener, 2-0.

Pinch-hitter Breanna Martin hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give Husson (6-8) a 4-2 win over Southern Maine (1-13), then the Eagles rolled to a 15-2 win in five innings in the second game at Bangor.

Stefanie Stockwell had a double and a homer, and Jessica Hayden had two doubles for the Huskies on the day.

MEN’S LACROSSE: Andrew Sullivan scored four goals and Jake Ricciardi had three, leading St. Joseph’s (5-6, 4-0 GNAC) to a 14-8 win over Rivier (6-5, 2-4) at Nashua, N.H.

Dan St. Peter scored three goals, and Kayle Hamilton had two goals and an assist to pace Southern Maine (4-5) in an 11-4 win over Husson (2-6) at Bangor.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Washington is re-signing quarterback Rex Grossman and giving Pat White another chance after three years away from the NFL.

PREP SCHOOLS

BOYS’ LACROSSE: Dexter School recorded a 15-9 win over Berwick Academy at South Berwick. Sam Hereford had three goals and an assist for the Bulldogs.

Evan Robish and Evander Lenardson had two goals apiece for Hyde (2-0) in a 9-4 win over Kents Hill at Bath.

BASKETBALL

NBA D-LEAGUE: The Maine Red Claws, who play their final two games of the season Friday and Saturday at Erie, are in a three-way tie for the last playoff spot.

Sioux Falls, Maine and Erie are 25-23. If Maine wins both games at Erie, it’s in the playoffs. If the Claws win one game, they need either Sioux Falls or Fort Wayne (26-22) to lose both their remaining games.

NAME CHANGE: The current Big East will rebrand as the “American Athletic Conference” at the conclusion of the current athletic season. The new conference agreed to relinquish the “Big East Conference” name to the so-called Catholic Seven schools.

SNOWBOARDING

CHAMPIONSHIP: Katie Keough of Cumberland placed first in the women’s 18- to 22-year-old division of the giant slalom at the United States of America Snowboard Association’s championships at Copper Mountain, Colo.
