Claws make a roster move before playoff opener
The Maine Red Claws acquired forward Justin Hawkins and waived guard Micah Downs on Tuesday.
Hawkins, who played for New Mexico State from 2005-08, was playing for Boulazac Basket Dordogne in France's Pro-A League, where he scored 68 points and collected 34 rebounds in 255 minutes.
He's expected to be in the lineup Thursday night when the Red Claws meet the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the opener of their best-of-three D-League quarterfinals at the Portland Expo.
CANDLEPINS: Rick Leland of Hobbs Lucky Lanes in South Paris and Sue Barker of the Big 20 in Scarborough captured senior state championships in the season-ending event at Fryeburg.
The top 12 men and women from a five-event series for bowlers 55 and older advanced to the state finals.
Leland finished with a five-string handicapped total of 711 pins, finishing five ahead of Mike Napolitano and 10 ahead of Roger Link, both of the Big 20.
Barker totaled 717 to win the women's division by four pins over Lucy Merrow of Saco Valley. Pat Crane of Hobbs was third with 706.
NFL: Tight end Matthew Mulligan, a former University of Maine player, signed with the Green Bay Packers.
Mulligan is a fifth-year veteran who played in all 16 games for St. Louis last season. He had career highs with eight catches for 84 yards and his first career touchdown.
He also played three seasons for the New York Jets and one with the Miami Dolphins.
