Sea Dogs, Cats rained out, yet to be rescheduled

Friday’s Portland Sea Dogs game against the New Britain Rock Cats in New Britain, Conn., was postponed because of rain. No makeup date was announced.

The teams are slated to resume the series at 6:35 p.m., Saturday at New Britain Stadium. Kyle Kaminska (0-1) will get the start for Portland. The Rock Cats will send Alex Meyer (0-0) to the hill.

The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field on Thursday for a seven-game homestand.

MEN’S HOCKEY: Forward Drew LeBlanc of St. Cloud State won the Hobey Baker Award, given to the nation’s top college player, and signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The fifth-year senior center was a two-year captain for the Huskies, who lost to Quinnipiac 4-1 on Thursday in the semifinals of the Frozen Four.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Marv Harshman, who spent 40 years coaching college basketball in the state of Washington and was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985, died Friday at 95.

G.G. Smith was promoted to head coach at Loyola (Md.) University following a six-year run as an assistant under Jimmy Patsos, who left earlier this month to take the top job at Siena.

JOHN R. WOODEN AWARD: Brittney Griner of Baylor was named women’s college basketball’s national player of the year for the second consecutive year.

Trey Burke of national runner-up Michigan won the men’s award last weekend at the Final Four.

U.S. MEN’S CLAY COURT: Top-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain advanced to the semifinals, using service breaks at the end of each set to beat Italy’s Paolo Lorenzo 6-4, 6-4 in Houston.

Almagro will face Rhyne Williams, the American wild card who rallied from an 0-3 deficit to beat Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.

GRAND PRIX HASSAN II: Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland cruised past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-1, 6-2 to move into the semifinals in Casablanca.

FOOTBALL

NFL: The New York Jets may be eager to unload Mark Sanchez’s hefty contract, but the struggling quarterback won’t be dealt along with Darrelle Revis, sources said.

Linebacker Rolando McClain signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens a few weeks after being released by Oakland.

BOXING

ROTARY FUND RAISER: Jason Quirk of the Portland Boxing Club scored a third-round knockout over John Xifaris of Lowell, Mass., in the open class middleweight division and PBC’s Chi Wong knocked out fellow novice lightweight Derec Szalkiewicz of Chicopee, Mass., in the second round at an event for the Andover, Mass., Rotary.

HIGH SCHOOLS

LACROSSE: Tyler Elkington had six goals and six assists to lead Kennebunk to a 24-3 win over visiting Noble.
