Isner piles up aces in advancing to final

John Isner got his big serve working after a slow start to reach the final of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, beating defending champion Juan Monaco of Spain 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Houston on Saturday.

The fifth-seeded American will face Nicolas Almagro, the top-seeded Spaniard who needed only 58 minutes to beat American wild-card Rhyne Williams, 6-2, 6-1.

Isner finished with nine aces for a tournament total of 57, three short of Pete Sampras’ 2002 record.

GRAND PRIX HASSAN: Tommy Robredo of Spain and Kevin Anderson of South Africa rallied to semifinal victories, setting up a title match in Casablanca, Morocco.

CYCLING

UCI: Pat McQuaid will stand for a third term as president of cycling’s world governing body after winning the nomination of Cycling Ireland.

He has been International Cycling Union president since 2006. No rivals have yet emerged ahead of the September election.

COLLEGES

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Michigan guard Trey Burke is expected to announce Sunday that he’s skipping his last two seasons of college to enter the NBA draft.

Burke averaged 18.6 points and 6.7 assists in leading the Wolverines to the NCAA title game for the first time in two decades.

FOOTBALL: Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns to lead the maroon team over the white team 43-23 in Texas A&M’s spring game.

SOCCER

MLS: The Seattle Sounders and the New England Revolution played to a 0-0 tie in Seattle.

New England (1-2-2) has gone without a goal for four-plus games totaling 388 minutes since scoring in the 62nd minute of a season-opening 1-0 victory at Chicago on March 9.

FA CUP: Millwall fans fought among themselves at Wembley Stadium in London, overshadowing Wigan’s 2-0 victory that advanced the club to the first FA Cup final in its 81-year history. Wigan will return to Wembley for the final to face Manchester City or Chelsea, who meet Sunday.

HORSE RACING

BLUE GRASS STAKES: Java’s War edged Palace Malice by a neck to win the $750,000 stakes at Keeneland and solidify his credentials for the Kentucky Derby.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Haley Grimmer had five goals and two assists, leading Hebron Academy to a 12-5 victory over Gould Academy in Bethel.

Kelli Klassen had two goals and an assist for Hebron, and Kiana Melvin also scored twice. Brooke Kelly’s three goals led Gould.

• Melanie Mait, Tatiana Bradley and Izzy Reis scored three goals each to lead Berwick Academy (4-0) to a 15-2 win over Hyde (1-2) at South Berwick.
