McIlroy misses the cut at BMW Championships

Rory McIlroy was one of the five 2012 European Ryder Cup players to miss the cut in the BMW PGA Championship on Friday, while Medinah teammate Francesco Molinari took the lead at cold and wet Wentworth in Virginia Water, England.

The second-ranked McIlroy had a 3-over 75 to finish at 5 over. Two-time defending champion Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell and Paul Lawrie — all members of Europe’s winning team last year at Medinah — also dropped out early.

South Africa’s George Coetzee, Scotland’s Marc Warren, England’s Mark Foster and Spain’s Alejandro Canizares were tied for second.

• Matt Kuchar was 10-under par on the 16th green when the second round of the Colonial was suspended because of an impending storm at Fort Worth, Texas.

SENIOR PGA: Russ Cochran and Kenny Perry each shot a 5-under 66 to share the second-round lead in the Senior PGA Championship at St. Louis.

LPGA: Heather Bowie Young made birdies on half of the 12 holes that tour officials set up for a 6-under 39 at the Bahamas LPGA Classic, giving her a one-shot lead in the middle of a long, strange opening round that had no chance of finishing because of a three-hour delay. Severe flooding earlier in the week left much of the course under water. The hope is to complete three rounds of 12 holes to make the inaugural event official.

CYCLING

GIRO D’ITALIA: Cycling’s first major race since the end of the Lance Armstrong case was rattled by another high-profile positive doping test.

Former Giro d’Italia winner Danilo Di Luca tested positive for EPO in a surprise check at his home before this year’s race, organizers said.

If confirmed in a backup “B” sample, Di Luca risks a lifetime ban since this is his third offense.

• The 19th stage of the Giro d’Italia was canceled because of snow along the route and Saturday’s penultimate stage was altered for the same reasons, leaving Vincenzo Nibali with a much milder finish to defend his lead.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Tamika Catchings and Shavonte Zellous each scored 19 points, and the Indiana Fever opened defense of their WNBA title with a resounding 79-64 victory over the depleted San Antonio Silver Stars.

Katie Douglas added 18 points, and Erlana Larkins had eight points and 12 rebounds for Indiana.

Shenise Johnson scored 14 points and Shameka Christon added 10 for San Antonio, which lost its season opener for the first time since 2010. No other Silver Stars player scored more than nine points.

San Antonio was without Becky Hammon and Sophia Young.

COLLEGES

WOMEN’S GOLF: Annie Park shot a 1-under 71 to top the individual standings and help Southern California take its third NCAA women’s title with a record-setting team performance.

Southern California finished at 19-under 1,133 — 15 strokes better than the previous tournament mark set by UCLA in 2004 — to beat second-place Duke by 21 strokes.

• Oklahoma City University won the NAIA women’s golf championship at Lincoln, Neb., behind a 1-2 finish from Jessica Schiele and Elia Folch.
