Portland's Britton earns honors as Eastern League Pitcher of the Week

Portland Sea Dogs left-handed starter Drake Britton is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for June 3-9. Britton pitched eight innings of one-hit shutout ball in his only game of the week, with a season-high eight strikeouts in the Sea Dogs' 6-0 win over Erie on June 5.

Britton led all EL pitchers in batting average against (.040) and WHIP (0.25) last week and also ranked among the weekly league leaders in ERA, wins, innings pitched and strikeouts.

Britton joins Chris Martin as the only Sea Dog to earn the honor this season.

n The Sea Dogs will play a doubleheader at Hadlock Field against the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday, to make up a June 6 game that was rained out at Erie, Pa. The first game starts at 6 p.m.

COLLEGES: Adam Frazier had two more hits and two RBI and Wes Rea hit a two-run home run as Mississippi State (48-18) clinched a spot in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., by winning the completion of a suspended game 6-5 against Virginia (50-12).

Also heading to the CWS is North Carolina State (49-14), which beat Rice 5-4 in 17 innings late Sunday in the longest super regional game in NCAA history.

FCBL: Mekae Hyde doubled home Brian Doran with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Raging Tide (3-1) a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (1-2) in Old Orchard Beach.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams will join the returning Jim Boeheim as assistant coaches for the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team.

USA Basketball announced Thibodeau and Williams will work the next three years under longtime Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski. Thibodeau, from the Chicago Bulls, and Williams, from the New Orleans Pelicans, will be replacing Mike D'Antoni and Nate McMillan.


QUEEN'S CLUB: Former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt rallied past Michael Russell of the United States 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round at the Queen's Club tournament at London. He has won 111 matches on grass.

AEGON CLASSIC: Melanie Oudin's defense of her title at Birmingham, England, lasted only 57 minutes as she lost 6-3, 6-1 to Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round.

RANKINGS: French Open champion Rafael Nadal dropped from No. 4 to No. 5 in the ATP rankings, swapping places with David Ferrer, the man he beat in the Paris final.

Novak Djokovic remained No. 1, followed by No. 2 Andy Murray and No. 3 Roger Federer.

French Open champion Serena Williams increased her lead at No. 1 in the WTA rankings, while the runner-up, 2012 winner Maria Sharapova, fell from No. 2 to No. 3, trading spots with Victoria Azarenka.


IRELAND: Ireland dropped eight players, including six starters from last week's 3-0 win over the Faeroe Islands, for Tuesday night's exhibition game against world and European champion Spain at Yankee Stadium.

WPSL: Claire Plueler scored three times to lead the Boston Aztec (1-1-1) to a 8-0 victory over the Seacoast United Mariners (0-3) in Lewiston.


SOFTBALL: Kennadi Grover homered twice to power No. 3 Oceanside (17-1) to a 5-2 Eastern Class B semifinal victory over No. 2 Old Town (17-3) at Old Town.

Grover broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the fifth, and added her second homer in the seventh.
