Westbrook wins state Junior Legion title, advances to regional in Connecticut

Westbrook won the Junior Legion state tournament with a 6-3 victory over host South Portland on Monday, advancing to the regional tourney in Connecticut.

Westbrook (18-6) was led on offense by RBI singles from Jack McCullough, Josh Richards and Blake Fillmore. McCullough also made several tough defensive plays at shortstop and catcher Bailey Sawyer threw out a pair of base runners.

Earlier in the day, South Portland (16-10) advanced into the championship game with a 10-5 win over Portland as Sam Troiano knocked in four runs on two triples and Brian Currie added a pair of RBI singles.

For Portland (17-7), Nick DiPalma went 3 for 4 with a two-run double and Silas Corman added a two-run single.

In the regional at South Windsor, Conn., Westbrook will play host South Windsor at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

FCBL: The Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (22-27) were swept in a doubleheader against the Nashua (N.H.) Silver Knights (32-17), falling 6-0 and 2-1 The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.

In the first game, Zach Collett had two of the four hits mustered by the Raging Tide. The Silver Knights were powered by a two-run double from EJ Martinez and Matt Mottola’s 3-for-4 effort, including a double and two runs scored.

In the second game, the Tide left six runners on base.
