Westport wins in extra innings to advance to U.S. final in Little League World Series

Chad Knight lined a run-scoring single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning, and New England champion Westport, Conn., beat Northwest champion Sammamish, Wash., 14-13 in a wild game Friday to earn a spot in the U.S. championship game of the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pa.

Knight also hit a solo homer to tie it in the fifth, when Connecticut scored seven runs to get out of a 13-6 hole.

Connecticut will play Chula Vista, Calif., on Saturday, while Tijuana, Mexico, will face Tokyo for the international title. The World Series championship game is Sunday.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Dean Meminger, the former Marquette guard who played a reserve role on the New York Knicks’ 1973 NBA championship team, was found dead in a Manhattan hotel room. He was 65.

New York City police said staff at the Hamilton Heights Hotel found Meminger unconscious and unresponsive inside a room and emergency personnel pronounced him dead. Police said there were no signs of trauma and that the cause of death hadn’t been determined. They said an investigation is ongoing.

Meminger averaged 6.1 points in six seasons with the Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. A former New York City prep star at Rice High School, Meminger led Marquette to a 78-9 mark in three seasons, averaging 18.8 points.

• The Golden State Warriors signed Seth Curry to a non-guaranteed contract, giving him a chance to join his older brother, Stephen. The undrafted former Duke guard will compete for a roster spot in training camp.

WNBA: Monique Currie scored 15 points, Kia Vaughn had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the Washington Mystics took a 74-64 win over the visiting Atlanta Dream.

COLLEGES

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Eve L’Abbe scored from Maggie Malone 26 seconds into overtime as the University of Maine opened with a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross at Portland.

The Black Bears had a 15-4 edge in shots.

TENNIS

NEW HAVEN OPEN: Simona Halep beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 7-5 to reach the final at New Haven, Conn.

The 21-year-old Romanian will look for her fourth title after winning three times on the WTA Tour since June.

She will play defending champion Petra Kvitova. The Czech star beat countrywoman Klara Zakopalova 6-0, 6-1.

winston-salem open: Gael Monfils of France and Jurgen Melzer of Austria upset higher-ranked players to advance to the final at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Monfils, ranked No. 43, beat No. 38 Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine 7-6 (11), 6-3, and the 32nd-ranked Melzer defeated No. 29 Sam Querrey of the United States 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

GOLF

LPGA: Top-ranked Inbee Park shot a 5-under 65 for a share of the second-round lead with playing partner Cristie Kerr in the Canadian Women’s Open at Edmonton, Alberta.

Park had seven birdies and two bogeys at Royal Mayfair to match Kerr at 8-under 132.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Ricardo Gonzalez shot a second straight 7-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead over Bernd Wiesberger after two rounds of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, Scotland.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bart Bryant got off to a fast start in his bid to win consecutive titles, shooting a 6-under 66 to take the first-round lead in the Boeing Classic at Snoqualmie, Wash.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Washington Capitals signed Mikhail Grabovski to a one-year, $3 million contract, giving the team another candidate for second-line center. Grabovski, 29, spent the last five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who bought out his contract after his 16-point campaign last season.
