Bowdoin defeats USM, soccer coach wins debut

Zach Danssaert scored twice Tuesday as Bowdoin College scored all of its goals in the first half to defeat the University of Southern Maine 5-0 at Brunswick, giving Coach Scott Wiercinski a win in his Polar Bear debut.

Ben Citrin opened the scoring after 5:25 and Andrew Jones made it 2-0 at 10:09. Danssaert, Hunter Miller and Danssaert again added goals against USM (0-2).

• Peabo Knoth passed across the goal area to set up Jonathan Lin’s goal 15 minutes into the second half, then put in a rebound with 15 minutes left to give Bates (1-0) a 2-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy (0-1-1) at Lewiston.

FIELD HOCKEY: Emily McCoy and Emma Plasteras scored twice each to lead Boston College (3-0) to a 5-4 win over visiting Maine (0-3).

Holly Stewart’s second goal of the game gave Maine a 3-2 lead before Plasteras tied it, McCoy set up Kelcie Hromisin for a 4-3 lead, then McCoy scored to make it 5-3. Marissa Shaw and Cassidy Svetek also scored for the Black Bears.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Phoenix and forward Michael Beasley reached an agreement to terminate his contract — a move that will cost the franchise $7 million, a $2 million savings from what Beasley would have been due had he simply been waived.

• Toronto waived swingman Quentin Richardson, less than two months after he was acquired in a trade with New York.

SAILING

AMERICA’S CUP: Defending champion Oracle Team USA was docked two points for illegal modifications in the America’s Cup match against Emirates Team Zealand in the harshest penalty levied in the 162-year history of sailing’s marquee regatta.

Oracle Team USA, owned by a software billionaire, Larry Ellison of Oracle Corp., essentially starts the match at minus-2, meaning it must win 11 races to retain the oldest trophy in international sports. Team New Zealand must still win nine races to claim the silver trophy. The match begins with two races Saturday and two Sunday on San Francisco Bay.

TENNIS

DAVIS CUP: Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek will play for defending champion Czech Republic when it meets Argentina in next week’s Davis Cup semifinals.

In the other semifinal, top-ranked Novak Djokovic will lead Serbia against a Canadian team powered by Milos Raonic. This is the first time Canada has made the World Group semis.

LOPEZ BOOK: Nancy Lopez has an agreement with HarperOne, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, for a memoir to be published in June. The book is untitled.

AUTO RACING

STEWART PROGRESSING: An upbeat Tony Stewart said he views his broken right leg as “a small bump in the road” and believes he’s on pace to return to racing in time for next year’s Daytona 500.

Stewart made his first appearance since his Aug. 5 injury.
