Red Claws open season by hosting Springfield

The Maine Red Claws open their NBA Development League schedule by hosting the Springfield Armor on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.

The Delaware 87ers, the league’s 17th team, begin their inaugural season as part of the East Division with Maine, Canton, Erie, Fort Wayne and Springfield. Delaware will be affiliated with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Red Claws face Delaware for a 1 p.m. game on New Year’s Eve that will begin a four-game homestand.

Maine will be home for eight games during March, including five Sunday afternoon games with a 1 p.m. tip-off.

COLLEGES

FIELD HOCKEY: Brittany Hawkins scored the tying and winning goals in the final 20 minutes to lead Gordon (2-0) to a 5-4 victory over USM (2-1) at Gorham.

Natalie Harkins had two goals and an assist, and Peyton Dostie added a pair of goals for USM.

• Caroline Falcone scored five goals to power Bates (1-0) past the Terriers (1-2) 8-2 at Lewiston. Lexie Carter added two goals and Claire Markonic one for the Bobcats. Erica Blake and Brittany Premo scored for Thomas.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: CBS Sports struck a deal with Fox Sports to acquire the rights to televise Big East men’s basketball games from the 2013-14 season through 2018-19.

In the first year of the deal, CBS will broadcast two games and CBS Sports Network will air 18.

Beginning with the 2014-15 season, CBS Sports will have the rights to up to 30 men’s basketball games per year, with up to five on CBS.

• University of Miami Coach Jim Larranaga, who turns 64 next month, received a three-year extension in what works out as a nine-year deal that runs through May 31, 2022.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Calgary Flames hired Brian Burke as their new president of hockey operations.

Calgary is in a rebuilding mode after missing the playoffs for a fourth straight season.

Burke was fired as president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs in January. He then worked as a part-time scout with the Anaheim Ducks.

Burke, 58, played for the Maine Mariners, Portland’s first AHL team, in 1977-1978, before opting for law school. Aside from Toronto, he also was general manager of the Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim.

• Former University of Maine forward Joey Diamond is among 31 players at the New York Islanders’ rookie camp at Uniondale, N.Y.

Following four seasons at Maine, Diamond scored two goals and had three assists in 10 games last spring with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Islanders’ AHL affiliate.

EUROPEAN MASTERS: Anirban Lahiri of India shot an 8-under 63 Thursday for a two-stroke lead at Crans-Sur-Sierre, Switzerland, while 13-year-old Ye Wo-cheng of China finished with a 78.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: World champion Philippe Gilbert won the 12th stage at Tarragona, Spain, and Vincenzo Nibali retained the leader’s jersey.

OLYMPICS

2020 GAMES: In a tight race to land the 2020 Olympics, Tokyo bid leaders focused on the country’s clean record in doping, while NBA star Pau Gasol of the Lakers tried to help Madrid by saying the games could boost his nation’s ailing economy.

The host city will be selected Saturday by the IOC.
