Kelly’s overtime goal lifts Bruins past Capitals, 3-2

Chris Kelly scored 3:39 into overtime and defenseman Zdeno Chara scored two goals to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals in a preseason game Monday night in Boston.

Kelly scored on the rebound of a shot from the left point by defenseman Matt Bartkowski.

The Bruins outshot the Capitals 38-14. Tuukka Rask made 12 saves, while Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots for Washington.

Connor Carrick scored 11:16 into the second period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead on just their second shot of the night.

Chara scored the next two goals, at 18:22 of the second period and 22 seconds into the third on a five-on-three power play. Martin Erat tied it at 6:38 of the third.

COLLEGES

MEN’S SOCCER: Geiser Tuctuc and Layne Kearney-Graffam each had two goals and two assists as visiting Southern Maine Community College (4-3, 3-1 Yankee Small College Conference) cruised to a 12-0 win over UMaine-Augusta.

Kyle Stiefken also scored twice. Anthony Beaulieu and Evan Meiler each had a goal and an assist.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Michela Desjardins scored three goals, and Zyrah Giustra added two goals and two assists for Southern Maine Community College (3-2-1, 2-1 Yankee Small College Conference) in a 9-0 win at UMaine-Augusta.
