Monarchs blank Pirates in final preseason game

Martin Jones stopped all 24 shots he faced Sunday afternoon for the Manchester Monarchs in a 3-0 exhibition victory over the Portland Pirates at Goffstown, N.H.

Manchester jumped out to an early lead, as Andrew Campbell opened the scoring just 3:13 into the game.

Jordan Weal and Brian O’Neill added goals 25 seconds apart midway through the third period.

Mike Lee finished with 24 saves for the Pirates, who open the regular season Oct. 9 against Manchester at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

NHL: Former Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference was named captain of the Edmonton Oilers.

Ference, 34, is entering his 14th NHL season and his first with the Oilers.

FOOTBALL

NEFL: Kendrick Ballantyne caught two of the three touchdown passes thrown by Jeremy Shorey as the Maine Sabers (10-0) completed an undefeated regular season with a 41-28 win over the New Hampshire Wolfpack (4-6) on Sunday night at Manchester, N.H.

Shane Ceriello also caught a touchdown pass and Brendan Hovey scored on a 6-yard run. Lamir Whetstone added an interception return for a touchdown.

The Sabers receive a first-round bye and will host a second-round playoff game at 1 p.m. on Oct. 12.

HIGH SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Jenna Soucy scored a pair of goals to lead Windham (7-0) to a 4-2 win Saturday at Gorham (5-2).

Cassie Symonds and Emily Gilman added a goal apiece for Windham. Gorham got one goal each from Lizzie Sullivan and Abbie Laporte.

FIELD HOCKEY: Katie Overhaug scored late in the second half Saturday to lift Yarmouth (5-2-1) to a 1-0 win over Sacopee Valley (0-6-1) at South Hiram.

Tori Messina stopped two shots to record the shutout. Sacopee goalie Chloe Ronco finished with 23 saves.
