Bell scores three goals to lead Unity over SMCC in women’s soccer playoff

McKinley Bell completed a hat trick 4 minutes into overtime to lift Unity College to a 3-2 women’s soccer win Wednesday over Southern Maine CC (5-4-4) in a Yankee Small College Conference quarterfinal at South Portland. Michela Desjardins and Zyrah Giustra scored for the Seawolves.

FIELD HOCKEY: Hannah Warren had a goal and an assist as the University of New England (9-5) scored three times in the first half of a 3-0 win over No. 18 MIT (11-2) at Biddeford.

Goalkeeper Holly Smith stopped three shots for the shutout.

MEN’S SOCCER: Dan Remillard and Luis Pereira scored two goals each to lead Bates (4-5-2) to a 9-0 win over Southern Maine (0-14-1) at Lewiston. Peabo Knoth added a goal and two assists.

PGA: Masters champion Adam Scott set the course record with a 7-under 64 to beat U.S. Open champion Justin Rose by two shots to win the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.

TENNIS

KREMLIN CUP: Samantha Stosur advanced to the second round by beating Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-1.

STOCKHOLM OPEN: Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy Janovicz of Poland breezed into the quarters by beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-2, 6-1.

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic outlasted Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 7-6 (4), 5-7, 7-6 (5) in Vienna to reach the quarterfinals.

LUXEMBOURG OPEN: Bojana Jovanovski advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Su-Wei Hsieh.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Siobhan McDermott scored for Berwick Academy in a 3-1 loss to Pingree School at South Berwick.

BOYS SOCCER: Phillips Exeter Academy (5-5-1) blanked host Berwick Academy (7-2-3) 3-0.

USA NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS: Portland Boxing Club welterweight Casey Kramlich won a close but unanimous decision over Darren Colucci of Swampscott, Mass., on Sunday in opening-night action at the USA New England Championships in Southbridge, Mass.

Open class middleweight Jason Quirk of Scarborough lost a close but unanimous decision to Adam Paolino of Providence, R.I.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: Liz Riley, assistant general manager and director of sales and promotions for the Portland Sea Dogs, is the league’s nominee for the Rawlings Woman Executive of the Year Award, which is given to a woman executive from major or minor league baseball who has made an outstanding contribution to the game. The winner will be selected in Orlando, Fla., in December.
