Major League Notebook: Suspensions, fines result from brawl

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy has been suspended for 10 games and infielder Eric Hinske was suspended for five games for their roles in a brawl this week, and Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly and Arizona Manager Kirk Gibson were given one-game bans.

In all, eight members of the Diamondbacks and Dodgers organizations were suspended Friday by Major League Baseball Senior Vice President Joe Garagiola Jr.

He cited Kennedy for intentionally throwing at the head of Zack Greinke after a warning had been issued Tuesday and Hinske for leaving the dugout and "aggressive actions." Mattingly was penalized for his conduct, and Gibson for Kennedy's actions following a warning.

Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell and infielder-outfielder Skip Schumaker were suspended two games apiece and pitcher Ronald Belisario was suspended one game. Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire also was suspended for two games.

ROCKIES: Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will be out between four to six weeks because of a broken rib suffered in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals.

YANKEES: Third baseman Kevin Youkilis was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a back injury.

BRAVES: General Manager Frank Wren said Brandon Beachy's right arm is "a little tender" after his latest rehab appearance as he continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery, and he won't make his season debut on Tuesday as originally planned.

RANGERS: Infielder Jeff Baker sprained his right thumb Thursday receiving a high-five from a teammate and was not in the lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

PIRATES: Pitcher A.J. Burnett is wearing a walking boot over his torn right calf and isn't sure when he'll be ready to return. He was placed on the 15-day DL.
