ARLINGTON, Texas – Rookie pitcher Martin Perez is scheduled to make his first major league start today for the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers said Friday that the left-hander will start the third game of a four-game series against Oakland instead of rookie Justin Grimm.
Perez, Texas' top pitching prospect, made his major league debut Wednesday night. He allowed four runs, only one earned, while recording two outs against Detroit.
Grimm is 1-1 with an 11.57 ERA in two starts.
MARINERS: Franklin Gutierrez was placed on the seven-day disabled list, a day after suffering a mild concussion when a pick-off attempt in a Thursday game against Boston hit him in the face.
DODGERS: Los Angeles signed outfielder Yasiel Puig to a seven-year, $42 million contract, a record deal for a Cuban defector and a clear sign the team has rediscovered its tradition of pursuing international players.
ROCKIES: Colorado recalled right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned left-hander Edwar Cabrera there two days after he struggled in his major league debut.
TWINS: Minnesota and catcher Ryan Doumit agreed to a new $7 million, two-year contract. Doumit, 32, is hitting .271 with seven homers and 32 RBI.
