ORONO – Morgan Sabia scored 19 points and Hartford held off Maine 61-59 in an America East college men’s basketball game on Wednesday night.

The Hawks (4-10, 1-0) trailed by as many as eight in the first half and 26-22 at halftime before turning around early shooting woes. Hartford, which lost five straight before beating St. Francis (N.Y.) 82-74 on Jan. 3, was just 7 of 25 from the field in the first half (28 percent) before making 15 of 26 in the second (57.7 percent).

The score remained close until the Hawks broke a 42-42 tie with eight straight points, including six by Joe Zeglinski, who finished with 16.

The Hawks held the lead before Maine (7-7, 1-1) used a 10-2 run to tie it for the 11th time on Troy Barnies’ layup with 2:44 to go.

Hartford, however, got a layup from Anthony Minor and a jumper from Sabia to pull away.

Barnies led the Black Bears with 18 points and Gerald McLemore added 13.

BATES 71, UNE 58: Brian Ellis scored 16 points to lead the Bobcats (8-4) over the Nor’easters (2-10) at Lewiston.

Alex Gallant had 12 points and John Squires finished with 10 points for Bates. Charles Fenner scored 22 points and Chas Rentrope had 12 points for UNE.

The Nor’easters trailed by 15 for much of the second half, but cut it to four, 55-51, with 6:23 left on consecutive 3-pointers by Fenner and Marcus Winn.

Bates responded with six straight points and two defensive stops to bring the lead back to 10.

USM 83, HUSSON 82: Corteze Isaac sank a jumper with 10 seconds left to give the Huskies (8-4) the win over the Eagles (7-3) at Gorham.

Otis Smith had 26 points and seven rebounds, while Isaac finished with 20 points.

Sean Bergeron added 14 points, six boards and five assists for Southern Maine.

Jay Uhrin scored 27 points and Josh Jones had 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Husson.

(1) DUKE 85, UAB 64: Nolan Smith scored 33 points to help the Blue Devils (14-0) beat Alabama-Birmingham (10-3) in Durham, N.C.

(3) KANSAS 99, UMKC 52: Josh Selby had 16 points to lead six Jayhawks (14-0) in double figures in a win over visiting UMKC (8-7).

(6) SAN DIEGO STATE 66, TCU 53: Malcolm Thomas had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Kawhi Leonard added 14 points and 11 rebounds and the duo also keyed a game-turning run after halftime as the Aztecs (16-0) beat the Horned Frogs (9-7) in Fort Worth, Texas.

(11) PURDUE 83, PENN STATE 68: JaJuan Johnson had 15 points as the Boilermakers (14-1, 3-0 Big Ten) clamped down on the host Nittany Lions (8-6, 1-2).

(19) CENTRAL FLORIDA 65, MARSHALL 58: Marcus Jordan had 26 points and five assists and the Knights (14-0, 1-0 Conference USA) beat the Thundering Herd (10-4, 0-1) in Orlando, Fla.

Jordan, son of NBA star Michael Jordan, had 17 points in the second half for UCF.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

HARTFORD 73, MAINE 43: Mary Silvia and Ilicia Mathis combined for 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks (5-10, 2-0 America East), who pulled away from the Black Bears (2-12, 0-2) in the second half at Hartford, Conn.

Amanda Weaver had 11 points and Alex Hall chipped in 10 for Hartford, which took a 25-19 halftime lead, then opened the second with a 16-7 run.

Ashley Roberts led Maine with 18 points.

USM 67, HUSSON 62: Courtney Cochran had 15 points and 16 rebounds and Renee Nicholas added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (6-6), who took a 39-26 halftime lead and held off the Eagles (2-7) at Gorham.

Kaylie DeMillo chipped in 12 points for Southern Maine. Erin McNamara had 10.

Brianna Hanscom led Husson with 18 points.

(2) CONNECTICUT 81, VILLANOVA 35: Tiffany Hayes scored 22 points and the Huskies (13-1, 3-0 Big East) hammered the Wildcats (7-7, 0-2) in Hartford, Conn.

Maya Moore added 16 for the Huskies, who won their 70th straight home game. Lindsay Kimmel led Villanova with six points.

(9) XAVIER 83, MISSOURI 51: Center Ta’Shia Phillips had her eighth double-double of the season, repeatedly drawing fouls off power moves to the basket, and the Musketeers (11-2) beat the Tigers (8-6) in Cincinnati.

Phillips had 16 points and 15 rebounds, the cornerstone of an offense with four players in double figures. Phillips went 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

SACRED HEART 2, USM 1: Lauren Fontaine scored twice in the second period and Alexius Schutt made 35 saves to lead the visiting Pioneers (3-14) past the Huskies (3-7-1).

Mary Vaughan scored a first-period goal for USM. Jordan Lee had 27 saves.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 3, BOWDOIN 3: Kayte Holtz and Dominique Lozzi scored third-period goals as the Polar Bears (6-3-1) rallied to tie the Pilgrims (6-3-1) at Brunswick.

Kaleigh Costello had two goals and an assist as New England College grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second.

Holtz got Bowdoin within one at 1:05 of the third and Lozzi tied it with 3:44 left.

The Polar Bears outshot the Pilgrims 17-5 in the third and 43-25 overall.

Kendra Sweet also scored for Bowdoin.
