College Roundup: UMaine men fall short to BU

BOSTON - Daryl Partin came off the bench to score 14 points and Dom Morris came on for 13 to propel Boston University to a 67-54 men's basketball victory over Maine Thursday night.

It was the third straight win for the Terriers (14-13, 10-3 America East) and 10th in their last 12 games.

BU led 17-4 midway through the first half on D.J. Irving's layup. The Terriers led 30-21 at the break, with Partin and Morris scoring seven points apiece.

Maine (11-12, 5-7) stayed close behind a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double by Mike Allison and 12 points by Jon McAlian.

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 77, BATES 61: Mike Akinrola had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Tahrike Carter added 16 points to lead the Anchormen (17-5) past the Bobcats (11-11) at Providence, R.I.

After trailing 33-27 at halftime, Bates cut the deficit to 52-51 with 8:31 to play, but Rhode Island responded with a 12-4 run in the next three minutes.

John Squries had 25 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.

ST. JOSEPH'S 73, RIVIER 61: Sophomore Matthew Medeiros and senior Zach O'Brien scored 22 points each for St. Joseph's (16-6, 12-5 GNAC) in a win over Rivier College (4-17, 2-12), at Nashua, N.H.

TENNESSEE ST. 72, (9) MURRAY ST. 68: Robert Covington had 17 points and eight rebounds as the Tigers (16-10, 9-4 Ohio Valley Conference) handed the Racers (23-1, 11-1) their first loss.

Murray State was the last unbeaten team in Division I.

(20) MISSISSIPPI ST. 70, MISSISSIPPI 60: Arnett Moultrie scored 18 points, Dee Bost dished a career-high 13 assists as the Bulldogs (19-5, 6-3 SEC) beat the Rebels (14-9, 4-5) at Starkville, Miss.

(21) WISCONSIN 68, MINNESOTA 61: Jordan Taylor scored 27 points to help the Badgers (19-6, 8-4 Big Ten) beat the Gophers (17-8, 5-7) in overtime, at Minneapolis.

(23) INDIANA 84, ILLINOIS 71: Cody Zeller scored 22 points and Victor Oladipo had 18 to lead the Hoosiers (19-6, 7-6 Big Ten) over the Illini (16-8, 5-6) at Bloomington, Ind.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

(5) DUKE 71, BOSTON COLLEGE 62: Chelsea Gray scored 10 of Duke's last 12 points as the Blue Devils (20-3, 11-0 ACC) avoided a shocking upset by beating the Eagles (5-19, 0-11) at Boston.

(8) MARYLAND 91, CLEMSON 61: Lynetta Kizer scored 18 points and the visiting Terrapins (21-3, 8-3 ACC) had six players in double figures to beat the Tigers (6-16, 2-9) for the 10th straight time.

DETROIT 70, (9) GREEN BAY 58: Shareta Brown scored 24 points and Senee Shearer added 23 to help the Titans (13-11, 9-3 Horizon League) upset the Phoenix (20-1, 10-1) at Green Bay, Wis.

The loss ended Green Bay's 40-game regular-season winning streak.

ILLINOIS 66, (10) OHIO STATE 65: Alexis Moore made a winning layup with two seconds left to give the Illini (9-16, 3-9 Big Ten) a win over the Buckeyes (21-3, 8-3) at Champaign, Ill.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

BOWDOIN: Maren Rojas stepped down as coach of the women's soccer team and accepted a position as assistant coach to Alison Foley at Boston College.

Rojas led the Polar Bears for five seasons with a 39-30-10 record and five NESCAC tournament appearances.
