STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Tommy Lawrence pitched a seven-hitter and Scott Heath drove in the game’s only run as Maine edged Stony Brook 1-0 in an America East Conference baseball opener on Saturday.

Lawrence struck out seven and walked two.

Maine managed to small-ball its run in the fourth when Colin Gay singled, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on Heath’s fly out.

USM 2, FARMINGDALE STATE 1: Logan Carman, Andrew Richards and Forrest Chadwick combined on a four-hitter as the Huskies (3-0) beat the Rams (5-8) at Farmingdale, N.Y.

Carman (2-0) struck out seven and allowed two hits and a run before Richards took over with two outs in the seventh. Chadwick pitched the ninth for his first save.

Chadwick and Sam Dexter each drove in a run and Anthony Pisani had two hits for USM.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 9, EMERSON 6: Cassie Diplock scored three goals to lead the Monks (3-2) as they scored five straight goals in the second half to pull away from the Lions (2-3) at Boston.

Kat Gadbois and Anneka Adame added two goals apiece for the Monks.

BOWDOIN 11, AMHERST 4: Carolyn Gorajek tallied four goals and added an assist, while Jordan Smith also had four goals as the Polar Bears (3-0) dominated Amherst (1-2) during NESCAC play at Brunswick.

Bowdoin’s Tara Connolly had 12 saves.

COLBY 18, UNE 0: Lindsey McKenna scored three goals and Alex Mintz added one goal and four assists as the seventh-ranked Mules (2-0) cruised to a win over the Nor’easters (0-4) at Waterville.

BATES 8 WESLEYAN 7: Emma Getsinger scored her fourth goal of the game with just 9.7 seconds left to lift the Bobcats (2-3, 1-2) to a NESCAC win over the Cardinals (1-3, 0-3) at Middletown, Conn.

USM 12, CASTLETON STATE 10: Jacki Kelly scored five goals and assisted on another to lift the Huskies (4-0) to a win over the Spartans (0-4) at Gorham.

Samantha Purcell and Rosie Forster added two goals each for the Huskies.

MEN’S LACROSSE

USM 16, MAINE MARITIME 7: Kyle Baker scored four goals and assisted on another, and Mark White added two goals and two assists as the Huskies (1-3) downed the Mariners (0-4) at Gorham.

Southern Maine also got two goals apiece from Steve Ribero, Ryan Foley, Dylan Kenney and Mike Orlando.

Alex Hermes led the Mariners with three goals.

UNE 7, MIT 6: Mike Allan scored the eventual game-winner with two minutes left in the game and the Nor’easters (3-2) held on for a win over the Engineers (0-2) at Biddeford.

Tyler Thomas led the Nor’easters with two goals and three assists.

BATES 7, WESLEYAN 5: Jack Strain scored two goals for Bates, while Dan Hines and Nick Ford totaled one goal and two assists apiece to lead the Bobcats (3-2, 2-1 NESCAC) past Wesleyan (3-1, 2-1) at Lewiston.

HAMILTON 10, COLBY 5: Ian Deveau collected two goals and one assist to lead the Mules (2-1, 1-1) as they fell to the Continentals (2-1, 2-1) in a NESCAC game at Clinton, N.Y.

Greg McKillop, John Jennings and Whit Harwood Jr. added one goal apiece for Colby.

ST. JOSEPH’S 6, ANNA MARIA 5: Andrew Hamill scored on an assist from Max Meserve with 59 seconds left in regulation to break a 5-5 tie and lift the Monks (2-4, 1-0) to a win over the Amcats (2-3, 0-1) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener played at Deering High School.

Andrew Sullivan had two goals and an assist for the Monks.

AMHERST 9, BOWDOIN 6: Kane Haffey and Sam Lawlor scored two goals apiece for the Jeffs (2-2, 1-2) as they scored four times in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Polar Bears (1-2, 0-2) in a NESCAC game at Providence, R.I.

SOFTBALL

MAINE SWEPT: Rutgers (9-9) beat the Black Bears 2-0 in the first game of the day at Clearwater, Fla.

In the second game, Liberty (9-11) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 4-3 win over the Black Bears (3-24).

Jean Stevens hit a solo home run and Hilary Kane had a two-run double for Maine.

UNE SWEPT: Suny-Brockport scored all of its runs in the first three innings and went on to beat the Nor’easters 13-9 in a mutual season opener at Cape Coral, Fla.

Adrienne Chase had two hits, including a two-run homer and three RBI for the Nor’easters.

In the second game, NYU Polytechnic (1-2) held on for a 4-2 win.

Amanda Vallante had a pair of hits and drove in one run for the Nor’easters (0-2).
