GARDEN CITY, N.J. – Tyler Patzalek drove in three runs and Justin Leisenheimer homered as the University of Maine beat Stony Brook 7-3 in the first game of an America East baseball doubleheader Sunday.

Stony Brook (19-8, 3-1 America East) won the second game, 7-0.

Keith Bilodeau pitched a complete game for the Black Bears (10-19, 1-3) in the opener, allowing eight hits.

BOWDOIN SWEEPS THOMAS: The Polar Bears (13-6) pounded out 29 hits, including 13 for extra bases, while winning a pair of games against the visiting Terriers (7-14), 7-6 and 12-0.

Bowdoin rallied in the first game, getting four runs in the sixth to erase a 4-3 deficit. Jordan Edgett tripled home the go-ahead run, and Brendan Garner and Joe Comizio each added an RBI single.

Evan Farley pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the second game. Brett Gorman smacked two doubles and a triple, and Adam Marquit had two triples among his three hits.

ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS WITH JOHNSON & WALES: Joe Gruntkosky pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts as St. Joseph’s (14-9) salvaged a doubleheader split with a 7-0 win against Johnson & Wales (16-10-1) at East Providence, R.I.

Ian Lee went 3 for 3 with two RBI in the second game as the Monks bounced back after losing the opener, 5-2.

COLBY SWEEPS PLYMOUTH STATE: The Mules (10-10) extended their winning streak to four with 3-2 and 7-6 victories over the Panthers (5-16) at Plymouth, N.H.

Robb Arndt hit a two-run single and scored on a single by Taro Gold in the opener. In the second game, Colby used a three-run fifth to take a 6-3 lead. Nikolas Atsalis stole home and Devlin McConnell had an RBI single.

SMCC SPLITS WITH DEAN: Dan French tossed a four-hitter to lead Southern Maine Community College (9-13) to a 4-1 win in the first game, but Dean (12-5) took a 7-3 victory in the second game with four runs in the eighth at South Portland.

In the opener, Scott Madden had an RBI single in the first inning, and Donnie Cray tripled and scored on a Tyler Kelly single in the third to help SMCC build a 3-0 lead.

The Seawolves erased a 3-0 deficit in the second game on an RBI single by Kelly and a two-run double by Ryan Lailer in the seventh.

SOFTBALL

STONY BROOK 9, MAINE 5: Jennifer Eberhardt was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Black Bears (15-22, 6-3 America East) in a loss to the Seawolves (12-18, 2-7) at Orono.

UNE SWEEPS WENTWORTH: Marie Mantelli was 4 for 6 with two homers and five RBI as the Nor’easters (21-5, 14-0 Commonwealth Coast) beat the Leopards (0-29, 0-18) 11-1 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings at Biddeford.

Amber Zablowsky held Wentworth to two hits in the opener. Amanda Vaudreuil doubled twice and drove in two runs.

Julie Bigelow struck out nine and allowed three hits in the second game. Stephanie Podolski was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Maegen Johnson had a home run.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS JOHNSON & WALES: Emily Leverone went 5 for 9 with a home run in each game and six RBI to help the Monks (18-6) take 10-2 and 7-2 wins over the Wildcats (10-15) at East Providence, R.I.

Katelyn Call added six hits, four runs and two RBI, and Danyelle Shufelt had five hits, three runs and two RBI.

Winning pitchers Kiera Walsh and Kayla Vannah allowed five and seven hits, respectively.

EASTERN CONNECTICUT SWEEPS USM: Molly Rathbun pitched a one-hitter in the opener and won the second game in relief as the Warriors (15-3, 4-0 Little East) rallied for 6-5 win in eight innings, capping a sweep at Willimantic, Conn.

Rathbun had two RBI and two runs scored in the first game, leading ECSU to an 8-0 win.

Anna Allard had four hits in the second game while helping USM (2-22, 0-4) build a 5-2 lead, but Jen Tamindzija hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Arielle Cooper tied it with a home run in the seventh.

UNLV: BYU associate coach Dave Rice was hired as head coach of the Runnin’ Rebels, returning to the school where he was an assistant under four head coaches for 11 seasons.
