KINGSTON, R.I. — Ashleigh Roberts made a go-ahead layup with 48 seconds left and Brittany Williams added three free-throws in the final 20 seconds to give the University of Maine women’s basketball team a 62-58 win over Rhode Island.

Williams, a senior guard, finished with a career-high 19 points. Corinne Wellington added 15 points and eight rebounds, and freshman guard Courtney Anderson had 10 points.

The Black Bears (1-1) used a 15-1 run to take a 22-8 lead with 8:13 left in the first half, but the Rams (0-2) chipped away and went ahead 58-57 on a pair of free throws by Teneka Whittaker with 1:08 remaining.

Former Maine coach Cindy Blodgett is now a Rhode Island assistant.

CROSS COUNTRY

NCAAs: Ethan Shaw of Kennebunk qualified for the NCAA Division I championships by finishing sixth at the Northeast Regional in Amherst, N.Y.

Shaw, a senior at Dartmouth, finished the 10-kilometer race in 31 minutes, 31.2 seconds.

The national championships are next Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.

• The Bates and Bowdoin men’s teams received at-large bids to the NCAA Division III championships Saturday at Winneconne, Wis.

Bowdoin finished third and Bates was fourth at the New England Regional.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NIAGARA 3, MAINE 3: Kallie Funk scored with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to give Niagara (6-6-3) a tie against the Black Bears (7-5-2) at Orono.

Tori Pasquariello scored twice for Maine, which overcame a 2-0 deficit with three third-period goals. Brittany Dougherty also scored and Brittney Huneke had two assists.
