Maine Colleges: UMaine's Trimper collects 400th win as Black Bears sweep

ORONO - Tommy Lawrence pitched a six-hitter in the opener and A.J. Bazdanes allowed only four hits in the second game as the University of Maine stretched its baseball winning streak to nine games with a pair of one-run victories Saturday against Stony Brook, 2-1 and 3-2.

The Game 2 victory was No. 400 for Coach Steve Trimper in 15 seasons, including seven at Manhattan.

Sam Balzano singled home Troy Black with the go-ahead run in the fifth inning of the opener.

RBI singles by Alex Calbick and Kyle Silva helped the Black Bears (24-14, 13-3 America East) open a 3-0 lead in Game 2.

USM SWEEPS PLYMOUTH STATE: Forrest Chadwick and Nick Grady each homered, and Sam Dexter drove in four runs as the Huskies (25-3, 7-0 Little East) collected their 19th straight victory with a 12-9 decision over Plymouth State (14-15, 3-6) after holding on for an 8-7 win in the opener.

Anthony Pisani had two hits and four RBI in Game 1.

ST. JOSEPH'S SPLITS WITH JOHNSON & WALES: Alex Lorenc had three hits and Mike Pratt hit a two-run triple to lead St. Joseph's (23-10, 10-3 GNAC) to a 5-2 win over the Wildcats (24-11, 10-3) in the opener at Providence, R.I.

The Monks lost 6-5 in Game 2, despite two RBI apiece from Sam Butts and Pratt.

BOWDOIN 13, WILLIAMS 5: Aaron Rosen had three hits, scored five runs and drove in one to pace a 14-hit offense for the Polar Bears (18-9) against the Ephs (10-17) at Williamstown, Mass.

COLBY SWEEPS TUFTS: Tim Corey went 4 for 4 and scored the winning run in the ninth inning of the opener, then drove home the deciding run in the ninth inning of Game 2 as the Mules (9-14, 2-7 NESCAC) earned 5-4 and 3-2 victories over the Jumbos (19-9, 5-4) at Waterville.

TRINITY SWEEPS BATES: Mekae Hyde went 3 for 5 with three RBI for Bates (11-14, 2-7 NESCAC East) in the second game, but the Bantams (17-13, 8-4) scored five runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 12-11 win.

Trinity won the opener, 3-2.

SMCC SWEEPS NHTI: Ethan Bilderback had four hits, including two doubles, while leading Southern Maine Community College (19-19-1, 9-1 YSCC) to a 20-10 victory over New Hampshire Tech in the first game of a doubleheader at Concord, N.H.

Nate McKeown and Brendan Reil each had two hits and an RBI in the second game -- a 7-6 SMCC victory.

SOFTBALL

ST. JOSEPH'S SPLITS WITH NORWICH: Lindsay Moore went 2 for 3 with a home run, and Heather Tripp and Melissa Mayhew also homered as St. Joseph's (26-8, 15-5 GNAC) earned a split with an 11-5 win over the Cadets (23-8, 18-4) after losing the opener 5-1 at Northfield, Vt.

UNE SWEEPS WENTWORTH: Erin Grover and Megan Gauger accounted for seven hits and nine RBI as the Nor'easters (19-14-1, 10-6 Commonwealth Coast) earned 16-3 and 9-1 victories over the Leopards (6-25, 0-16) at Biddeford.

USM SPLITS WITH KEENE STATE: Stefanie Stockwell struck out eight while throwing a four-hitter, and also hit an RBI single and scored the winning run to lift the Huskies (7-27, 2-8 Little East) to a 2-1 win over the Owls (15-10, 5-3) in the second game of a doubleheader at Gorham.

Keene State won the first game 3-0 in eight innings.

MAINE 2, STONY BROOK 0: Beth Spoehr pitched a three-hitter as the Black Bears (7-32, 3-7 America East) blanked the Seawolves (23-19, 6-5) at Orono.
