PORTLAND – Saturday was certainly memorable for Sea Dogs catcher Matt Spring, whose game-ending grand slam gave Portland a 10-7 come-from-behind victory.

The day might have been even more memorable for someone else in uniform Saturday.

Following the afternoon game, Eastern League umpire Brian deBrauwere made a successful marriage proposal at the Portland Head Light to Lauren Goepfert. They’re both from Hershey, Pa., but didn’t meet until after college.

“I went the day before just to scout it out,” said deBrauwere, who also hired a photographer to discreetly follow and get some candid reaction shots as well as some more formal pictures after Goepfert accepted.

“This is her first time to Portland, whereas I was here last year for a few series. It’s just a beautiful area and I thought it would all come together nicely.”

They celebrated with dinner at five fifty-five restaurant in Portland. While working out together at World Gym Sunday morning, they met another woman displaying an engagement ring. Turns out she had also gotten engaged Saturday night, at the same restaurant where deBrauwere and Goepfert were celebrating.

SEA DOGS outfielder Juan Carlos Linares missed his third straight game after being hit on the left hand with a pitch Thursday in New Hampshire. X-rays revealed nothing broken, but swelling persists.

“We’re day to day with him, seeing what kind of workload he can tolerate,” said Portland Manager Kevin Boles. “He’s getting some swings in the cage. He’s close but there’s still some swelling in that hand.”

SHORTSTOP Xander Bogaerts made a diving stop to his left on a ball hit by Cesar Puello in the ninth, then hopped around gingerly after picking himself off the ground.

“He should be fine,” said Boles, who was awaiting a trainer’s report. “It looked like he got up all right, but he was shaking his leg a little bit.”

HISSEY’S triple in the fifth was Portland’s Eastern League-leading 20th of the season. Reading is second with 15.
