College Roundup: USM earns overtime win

WATERVILLE - Kelly Burrell scored her second goal of the game 6:13 into overtime to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 3-2 win over Thomas in a women's soccer game Sunday.

Burrell opened the scoring for the Huskies (1-1) in the fifth minute on an assist from Stefanie Stockwell. Ally Abrahamson made it 2-0 in the 74th minute, but Kajsa Kaufeldt of Thomas (0-2) scored a pair of goals just 42 seconds apart in the final eight minutes of regulation.

MAINE 1, FRANCIS MARION 0: Maddie Hill scored in the 11th minute on assists from Nikki Misener and Maggie Malone as the Black Bears (3-2) beat the Patriots (2-2-1) at the Sleep Inn Bulldog Classic.

Lauren Swant made two saves to record the shutout.

MEN'S SOCCER

THOMAS 2, UNE 0: Michael Hand scored off a rebound 27 seconds into the game and assisted on a goal by Joshua Phelps in the 42nd minute as the Terriers (1-0) blanked the Nor'easters (1-1) at Waterville.

Mikkail Crockwell of Thomas and Aiden McParland of UNE each made five saves.

FIELD HOCKEY

SOUTHERN MAINE 5, NEUMANN 0: Peyton Dostie collected two goals and an assist, and Michaela George also scored twice as the Huskies (2-0) downed the Knights (0-2) in the USM Invitational at Gorham.

Rachel Trafton scored the other goal and Natalie Harkins had a pair of assists.

MICHIGAN 2, MAINE 0: Shannon Scavelli scored off a corner 14:50 into the game and Liesl Morris added a goal four minutes later as the Wolverines (2-2) beat the Black Bears (1-4) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Sydney Kolysher finished with six saves for the Black Bears.

CASTLETON STATE 3, UNE 1: Rachel Preusser and Kealy Chipman scored just over a minute apart early in the second half to lead the Spartans (1-1) to a win over the Nor'easters (0-1) at Castleton, Vt.

Castleton opened the scoring on an own goal by UNE 10 minutes into the game. The Nor'easters tied it on a goal by Casey Clark with one second remaining in the first half.

Kaitlyn Warren finished with 13 saves for the Nor'easters.

FOOTBALL

(25) LOUISVILLE 32, KENTUCKY 14: Jeremy Wright ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns and the Cardinals opened the game with three long scoring drives as they ended a three-game home losing streak to Kentucky.

Louisville moved the ball at will against the Wildcats, gaining 314 of its 466 yards in the first half thanks to touchdown drives of 99, 85 and 93 yards.

Senorise Perry added 108 yards on 16 carries, including a 47-yard TD that made it 15-7.

Sophomore quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, last year's Big East Conference rookie of the year, completed 10 of his first 11 passes and 19 of 21 overall for 232 yards.
