Maine Colleges: USM improves to 17-0, tops Eastern Connecticut

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Haley Jordan and Jordan Grant each scored 18 points, and the University of Southern Maine remained unbeaten with a 69-55 win Saturday against Eastern Connecticut State in a Little East Conference women's basketball game.

USM (17-0, 7-0 Little East) opened a 35-16 halftime lead against the Warriors (5-12, 3-4).

Southern Maine's 17-0 start is the best in program history, surpassing the 1987-88 team. 

UNE 76, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 55: Beth Suggs scored 16 points as the Nor'easters (12-4, 9-0 Commonwealth Coast) ran their winning streak to seven with a victory over Western New England (8-8, 5-4) in Biddeford.

Suggs also grabbed 13 rebounds. Sadie DiPierro added 13 points, Kelly Coleman 12 and Alanna Vose 11. 

ST. JOSEPH'S 73, ANNA MARIA 46: Morgan Cahill had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Danyelle Shufelt scored 17 points to lead the Monks (9-7, 3-2 GNAC) past the Amcats (4-12, 0-3) at Standish. 

BATES 80, WESLEYAN 78: Brianna Hawkins scored on a putback at the buzzer and Molly Brown had 27 points for the Bobcats (9-8, 3-3 NESCAC) in a win over the Cardinals (8-8, 1-5) at Lewiston. 

TRINITY 46, BOWDOIN 43: Christina Raiti made a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to lift the Bantams (12-5, 4-1 NESCAC) over the Polar Bears (8-8, 1-4) at Hartford, Conn.

Kaitlin Donahue scored 16 points for Bowdoin. 

AMHERST 69, COLBY 60: Diana Manduca went 8 of 11 from the field and finished with 24 points for the Mules (6-10, 1-4 NESCAC) in a loss to Amherst (17-0, 5-0) at Amherst, Mass. 

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 75, VERMONT TECH 60: Alicia Hoyt finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Esther Palmieri added 21 points as the Seawolves (11-6, 5-3 YSCC) beat the Knights (6-10, 3-4) in overtime at Randolph Center, Vt.


EASTERN CONNECTICUT 87, SOUTHERN MAINE 71: Sean Bergeron and James Odneal scored 16 points apiece for USM (10-7, 5-2 Little East), but the Warriors (12-5, 6-1) pulled away in the second half at Willimantic, Conn. 

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 62, UNE 60: Devin Thompson scored 16 points to pace the Nor'easters (3-13, 2-7 Commonwealth Coast) in an overtime loss to Western New England (5-10, 4-5) at Biddeford. 

ANNA MARIA 75, ST. JOSEPH'S 61: Matthew Medeiros scored 21 points and Steve Simonds had 18 for St. Joseph's (9-5, 5-3 GNAC) in a loss to the Amcats (7-7, 5-2) at Standish. 

TRINITY 69, BOWDOIN 67: Matt Mathias scored 18 points to pace the Polar Bears (9-6, 2-3 NESCAC), but their comeback bid fell short against the Bantams (9-6, 2-3) at Hartford, Conn. 

WESLEYAN 61, BATES 51: Graham Safford scored 18 points and Luke Matarazzo added 16 to lead the Bobcats (7-11, 2-4 NESCAC) as they fell to the Cardinals (8-10, 2-4) at Lewiston. 

AMHERST 98, COLBY 75: Chris Hudnut led the Mules (5-10, 2-3 NESCAC) with 15 points and Patrick Stewart added 13 in a loss to Amherst (15-2, 5-0) at Amherst, Mass.

VERMONT TECH 77, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 70: Jon Amabile scored 23 points to pace the Seawolves (16-5, 10-1 YSCC) in a loss to the Knights (9-8, 7-2) at Randolph Center, Vt.


BOWDOIN 3, MIDDLEBURY 0: Harry Matheson scored twice and Max Fenkell made 38 saves to lead the Polar Bears (15-1-1, 10-1-1 NESCAC) past the Panthers (6-8-2, 5-3-2) at Middlebury, Vt. 

CASTLETON STATE 3, USM 1: Stephen Gallo scored for Southern Maine (6-11, 3-7 ECAC East) against the Spartans (11-5-2, 6-4-1) at Rutland, Vt. 

SKIDMORE 3, UNE 1: Adam Laite scored for the Nor'easters (5-11, 3-8 ECAC East) in a loss to the Thoroughbreds (9-7-2, 6-4-1) at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 

WILLIAMS 9, COLBY 2: Nick Lanza and Ben Chwick each had a goal and an assist for Colby (3-13-1, 1-10-1 NESCAC) against the Ephs (9-4-2, 7-2-1) at Williamstown, Mass.


MAINE 3, VERMONT 2: Missy Denk scored 1:44 into overtime as the Black Bears (4-17-2, 1-10-1 Hockey East) rallied past the Catamounts (6-13-3, 4-4-3) at Orono. 

MIDDLEBURY 4, BOWDOIN 2: Rachel Kennedy scored both goals for Bowdoin (13-2-1, 7-1 NESCAC) in a loss to the Panthers (10-2-2, 7-1-2) at Brunswick. 

UMASS-BOSTON 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Erin Banfield scored for USM (4-8-4, 3-5-2 ECAC East) in a loss to the Beacons (7-9-2, 4-5-2) at Gorham. 

WILLIAMS 2, COLBY 1: Annie Papadellis scored for Colby (6-10, 2-8 NESCAC) against the Ephs (7-8, 4-4) at Waterville.
