DANBURY, Conn. – Brett Barrett hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning as the University of Southern Maine rallied for a 10-9 victory Sunday over Western Connecticut State in Little East baseball, kicking off a doubleheader sweep.

Anthony Pisani had three hits, five RBI and three runs scored for the Huskies (10-9, 4-1 Little East) in the opener. Pisani’s three-run homer in the top of the eighth gave USM an 8-6 lead, but the Colonials (6-9, 0-2) answered with three runs in the bottom half.

The Huskies got a stellar outing in the second game from Nick Douglass, who allowed one run and four hits in 62/3 innings. Grey Goodrich and Greg Holmes combined for 22/3 innings of hitless relief to close out a 4-1 victory.

Josh Mackey had three hits in each game and finished with four RBI.

TUFTS SWEEPS BATES: Chase Rose hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as the Jumbos (9-4-1, 3-0 NESCAC East) completed a doubleheader sweep with a 3-2 victory over the Bobcats (6-10, 0-3) after winning the opener 7-6 at Medford, Mass.

Gordy Webb hit a two-run homer for Bates in the first game, and Pat Murphy and Chris Burke also drove in two runs apiece.

AMHERST SWEEPS BOWDOIN: The Lord Jeffs (9-5) overcame a 5-0 deficit in the opener and finished with 13 hits in each game as they earned a pair of victories over the Polar Bears (9-4), winning 14-7 and 8-2 in a NESCAC doubleheader at Amherst, Mass.

Dan Findley hit a three-run homer and a double for Bowdoin in the first game. Joe Comizio had three hits and two RBI.

TRINITY SWEEPS COLBY: Stephen Rogers had five hits and seven RBI, and the Bantams (12-5, 3-0 NESCAC East) took advantage of nine Colby errors to sweep the Mules (6-9, 0-3) at Hartford, Conn., 13-2 and 15-6.

In the opener, Colin Cummings hit a two-run homer for Colby. Alec Finigan had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one for the Mules in the second game.

SOFTBALL

MAINE SWEEPS BOSTON UNIVERSITY: Kirstin Allen drove in three runs in the first game and Meghan McLain hit a three-run homer in the second game as the Black Bears (14-20, 5-1 America East) finished a sweep against the Terriers (18-10, 4-2), winning 8-2 and 6-1 at Boston.

Ashley Kelley allowed seven hits and struck out five to earn the win in the first game. Beth Spoehr pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts in Game 2. 

ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS WITH ST. JOSEPH (CONN.): Katelyn Call doubled home Lindsay Moore in the seventh inning to give the Monks (10-6) a 2-1 win in the opener at West Hartford, Conn.

Jill Howard also had an RBI double for the Monks, and Maddie Kluna pitched an eight-hitter with five strikeouts.

Shauna Sullivan had an RBI single in the second game and Rae-Marie Copan allowed only three hits, but the Monks lost 2-1 in eight innings. 

TRINITY SWEEPS BOWDOIN: Kristen Anderson and Katherine Poulos combined to allow just one unearned run as the Jumbos (11-6, 2-1 NESCAC East) beat the Polar Bears (6-13, 1-2) twice, 4-1 and 9-0 at Hartford, Conn.

Melissa DellaTorre took the loss in the opener despite allowing just five hits and two earned runs.

TUFTS SWEEPS BATES: Jo Clair hit three home runs to lead the Jumbos (11-8, 3-0 NESCAC East) to a sweep of the Bobcats (4-5, 0-3) at Medford, Mass., 9-3 and 8-0.

Leah Maciejewski had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for Bates in the opener.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 20, UNE 3: Katie Herter, Katie Stewart and Jordan Smith each scored three goals to pace the Polar Bears (7-1) past the Nor’easters (3-7) at Biddeford.

Devin Hardy, Helen Conaghan and Betsy Sachs added two goals apiece for Bowdoin.

UNE got goals from Jenna Barton, Hannah Tavella and Jessy Dvorak.

BATES 19, WELLESLEY 2: Jenn Brallier scored four goals, and Erin O’Connor had a goal and five assists as the Bobcats (4-4) routed the Blue (6-3) at Lewiston.

MOUNT IDA 16, ST. JOSEPH’S 13: Jen Thompson scored eight goals as the Mustangs (5-4, 2-1 GNAC) beat the Monks (3-2, 0-2) at Newton, Mass.

Amelia Santos had four goals and two assists for St. Joseph’s, and Cassie Diplock scored three straight goals in the second half to cut the Monks’ deficit to 15-13.

MEN’S LACROSSE

LASELL 18, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: The Lasers (3-6, 1-0 GNAC) scored 10 straight goals to pull away from the Monks (5-5, 0-1) at Deering High’s Memorial Field.

Jonathan Horgan paced St. Joseph’s with two goals.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UTAH: New Jersey Nets assistant Larry Krystkowiak has been hired as head coach, replacing Jim Boylen, a former UMaine player who was fired following consecutive losing seasons.

Krystkowiak, 46, played one season for the Utah Jazz as part of nine injury-plagued NBA seasons.

He was fired in 2008 after going 31-69 in one-plus season coaching the Milwaukee Bucks. He also coached two years at Montana, guiding the Grizzlies to the NCAA tournament both seasons.

DAYTON: Archie Miller was hired as head coach, less than a week after Brian Gregory left to take over at Georgia Tech.

Miller, 32, has been associate head coach the last two seasons for his older brother, Sean, at Arizona. He also has served as an assistant at North Carolina State, Arizona State and Ohio State.
