GORHAM – Jordan Grant scored in the first half and Amy Jose and Kelly Burrell added second-half goals as the University of Southern Maine won a women’s soccer opener over SUNY-Maritime on Friday.

Grant scored unassisted in the 17th minute, Jose put in a pass from C.C. Pelletier in the 56th minute and Burrell converted a penalty kick about five minutes later.

Katie Cobb made five saves for the win.

UMASS-BOSTON 4, UNE 0: Krista Ledin scored twice to lead the Beacons to the win over the Nor’easters in an opener at Boston.

Ledin gave the Beacons a 2-0 lead after converting a breakaway seven minutes after Tayla Andrews put in a corner kick by Brittany Castillo in the 18th minute.

Castillo also set up Alli Modzelewski in the 71st minute on a corner kick before Ledin got her second two minutes later.

Gina Iannazzi had 11 saves for UNE.

FIELD HOCKEY

USM 2, MANHATTANVILLE 1: Peyton Dostie and Allison Ward scored for Southern Maine in an opener against the Valiants at Gorham.

Dostie scored unassisted just before halftime and Ward put in a shot from the top of the circle following a pass from Samantha Crosman.

USM’s Amanda Kasbohm finished with nine saves.

MASSACHUSETTS 2, MAINE 1: The Minutemen won a season-opener over the Black Bears at Orono.

Annabelle Hamilton scored from Becca Paradee in the 56th minute for Maine. Natasha Ford made four saves in the first half and Sydney Kolysher stopped one shot in the second half for the Black Bears.

MEN’S SOCCER

COAST GUARD 3, USM 0: Joseph Bodzewski had two goals as the Bears beat the Huskies at New London, Conn.

UNE 0, MAINE MARITIME 0: The Nor’easters and the Mariners played to a scoreless tie at Biddeford. Aidan McParland had seven saves for UNE.

FOOTBALL

MIAMI: Trustee Bernie Kosar said the school held back 10 football scholarships last season in response to an ongoing NCAA probe, a claim that was quickly denied by athletic department officials.

Kosar, the former Hurricanes and NFL quarterback, made the comment before Miami’s season-opener against Florida Atlantic.
