Back in the summer of 2005, Zach Collett and Joey Royer were two of the key players in the Westbrook all-stars run to the Little League World Series. Next fall they’ll be reunited on the baseball diamond.

Collett, a senior infielder at Westbrook High, and Royer, a senior left-handed pitcher for Cheverus, have signed letters of intent to play baseball at the University of New Haven, a Division II program in the Northeast-10 Conference with Division I dreams.

“We recruit Division I caliber guys,” said Raphael Cerrato, the head coach of the Chargers. “We compete at a high level.”

The New Haven staff first saw the two in Maine’s junior all-star game last year and kept in touch over the summer. They also had some inside help: former Deering players Jack Heary and Taylor Candage.

When Collett and Royer visited the campus, they stayed with them. And, said Cerrato, Heary and Candage had great insights into the players.

“They both helped in the recruiting process,” said Cerrato. “They all knew each other. I talked to our guys about (Collett and Royer). They know our level of competition. We had some good conversations.”

Collett, said Cerrato, could fill a void in the middle of the Chargers lineup. He said, “I thought Zach was one of the best hitters we saw all summer whether you’re talking Division I or Division II.”

Royer is a likely starter for New Haven.

“He was one of the better lefties we saw,” said Cerrato. “And as good as he is now, he will get better.”
