Local Baseball: Windham, Gardiner advance

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Nate Boyle pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts Saturday to lead Windham to a 4-1 victory against Brewer at The Ballpark in a play-in game for the American Legion baseball state tournament.

The runner-up teams in four of the state's zone tournaments met to decide the final two berths in the state event.

Windham (16-6) scored two runs against Brewer (12-11) in the first inning on an error and a groundout, and Shawn Francoeur added a two-run single in the eighth.

Joe Francoeur, Robbie Hamilton and Shawn Francoeur finished with two hits apiece for Windham.

GARDINER 2, KENNEBUNK 0: Josh Martin struck out nine and walked one in a two-hitter at Old Orchard Beach to lift Gardiner (17-4) over Kennebunk (13-8) in a play-in game for the state tournament.

Gardiner opened the scoring on an RBI single by Spencer Allen in the first inning. Kyle Fletcher added an RBI single in the seventh.

SENIOR LEAGUE

SCARBOROUGH 8, COASTAL-HOME 6: Ian Corey singled home two runs and Zach Carriero doubled home another in a five-run second inning as Scarborough won the best-of-three state championship series at Bangor.

Coastal-Home forced a final game by beating Scarborough 5-4 in an eight-inning first game.

Scarborough will meet Auburn, Mass., at 7:30 p.m. Friday in its opening game of the East Regional at West Deptford, N.J.

JUNIOR LEGION

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 10, STANDISH POST 9: Jimmy Alt's second double of the game scored Thomas Wood and J.T. Magno in a three-run seventh inning as Gray-New Gloucester (9-9) walked off with a victory against Standish Post (9-9) at Gray.

Brandon Hubbard scored the first run of the seventh as Wood reached base on a fielder's choice.

LIBBY-MITCHELL 6, CUMBERLAND 4: Benito Onorato scattered eight hits and visiting Libby-Mitchell (12-5-1) broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning against Cumberland (13-5).

Sam Warren paced Libby-Mitchell with a pair of hits. Jon Wright had two hits, including a double, and scored for Cumberland.

BIDDEFORD SAVINGS 4, OA-YARMOUTH 3: Casey Twomey and Brandon Daigle each singled and scored for Biddeford Savings (12-6), which scored twice in the sixth inning to overcome a 3-2 deficit at Biddeford.

FALMOUTH 2, SOUTH PORTLAND 1: Caleb Lydick hit a winning RBI double in the eighth inning to lift Falmouth (6-12) over visiting South Portland (7-10).
